AUCTION TO BENEFIT FOR ARTS CENTER

A signed watercolor by the late David Kent of the Masonic Temple in Snowville will be among the artwork offered in a fund-raising auction for the Fine Arts Center of the New River Valley starting at 7 a.m. April 27.

The piece was donated by the estate of David Kent, who was one of Pulaski's best-known artists and photographers. Framing was donated by the Casimir Company store.

The center staff and volunteers have been soliciting items for the auction, to be held at the center's annex at 44 Fourth St.

Area restaurants and caterers are contributing refreshments, and Radford's Miles High Trio will provide entertainment. Dee Dee Edwards will conduct the auction.

Other art donations include four original watercolors by Ron King, formerly of Pulaski; a study of artists at work by Jean Nelson of Blacksburg, a pillowcase doll by Jerry Powell, a birch grove mixed-media piece by Lyndall Mason, a stained glass lamp by Al Trivisonno, a vase by Hoffman Pottery, and hand-carved dipped candle by Laraine Simpson, and two Fred Goad prints donated by Kathy Jo Sledd.

"When you stop to think about it, these people are giving their livelihood to us," said Michael Dowell, center director. "By giving to an auction, they are giving up the trade that puts food on their tables."

He said some people are buying art from the center's gift shop and donating it to the auction. "This way, the center gets the double bonus," he said.

Other donated items for the auction include tickets to the Charlotte Motor and New River Valley speedways, a Pulaski Furniture Co. curio cabinet, cellular telephones, Draper Mercantile furniture and items from places like Myoptics Eyewear, Leggett, Grand Piano, Lime Kiln Theatre and Holdren's.

The auction is open to the general public. Dowell stressed that those attending need not be Fine Arts Center members.
