Fund-raising dinner

NARROWS - The Giles Multidiscipline Team for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect will have a fund-raising dinner at Anna's Restaurant. The dinner will be April 27 from 5 to 9 p.m. Entertainment and door prizes will be provided. Cost is $7 per person. Menu is choice of chicken or barbecue, dessert and drink.

Zoning meetings

BLACKSBURG - Blacksburg residents have the opportunity to attend several meetings scheduled to review the proposed changes to the Zoning Ordinance. Residents will be able to see how these changes would affect their property and neighborhood. Following is a list of meeting places and dates for respective neighborhoods. All meetings are from 7 to 9 p.m.

HETHWOOD (West of Plantation Road) at Kipps Elementary School, Prices Fork Road, Wednesday.

OLD TOWN (Downtown and surrounding neighborhoods) at Blacksburg Municipal Building, 300 S. Main St., Thursday.

SOUTH END (South of Ellett Road) at Townside Realty, 2803 S. Main St., Monday.

NORTH END (North of Givens Lane) at Blacksburg Christian Fellowship, 2300 N. Main St., May 1.

MID-TOWN CRESCENT at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, corner of Church and Eakin Streets, May 2.

All comments made at these meetings will be considered and appropriate revisions will be made to the zoning proposals over the summer. A follow-up series of meetings will be held in September for further review and comment.

Candidate forum

RADFORD - There will be a forum for Radford School Board candidates Thursday at the Radford Municipal Building at 7 p.m. Candidates Carter Effler, Christopher Harrison and Roberta Nester will be present. Henry M. "Mac" Harvey will be the moderator.

The forum is sponsored by the Radford Chamber of Commerce, American Association of University Women and the Woman's Club of Radford.

Radford City Council candidates Annyce Levy and David Worrell also will be present.

Policy workshop

BLACKSBURG - The Science Policy Discussion Group of Virginia Tech is hosting the "Practicing Policy Workshop" Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Squires Brush Mountain Room A.

The discussion will explore public policy issues involving the environment, health and safety information and urban renewal. There will be four workshops throughout the day and group members will be rotated so they may attend at least three of the four.

The workshop is open to the public and there is no cost. Registration is encouraged.

Free shots

NEW RIVER VALLEY - The Montgomery County Public Schools and the Montgomery County Health Department will offer free immunization to children in May. State law requires that all children entering kindergarten must have proof of his/her immunization status. A minimum of four DPTs (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus), three OPVs or IPVs (oral polio or inactivated polio vaccine) with one of each given after the fourth birthday, and two MMRs (measles, mumps, rubella) are required in order to enter school. Only children with medical or religious exemptions are not required to receive these immunizations.

Parents should bring a copy previous immunizations in order for health personnel to determine what shots, if any, are needed.

The immunization schedule follows:

May 6 - Harding Avenue Elementary: 9-10 a.m.; Margaret Beeks Elementary: 10:30-11:30 a.m.; Gilbert Linkous Elementary: 1-2 p.m.

May 7 - Bethel Elementary: 9-10 a.m.; Riner Elementary: 10:30-11:30 a.m.; Falling Branch Elementary: 1-2 p.m.

May 8 - Elliston-Lafayette Elementary: 9-10 a.m.; Shawsville Elementary: 10:30-11:20 a.m.; Christiansburg Primary: 1-2 p.m.

May 9 - Kipps Elementary: 9-10 a.m.; Prices Fork Elementary: 10:30-11:30 a.m.; Belview Elementary: 1-2 p.m.
