The Consumer Price Index, the government's primary inflation measure, stood at 155.7 points at the end of March, up 0.4 percent from 154.9 in February and 2.8 percent from 151.4 in March 1995. That means a collection of goods and services that cost $151.40 a year ago carried a price tag of $155.70 last month.
The figures were based on 1982-84 prices. If the Bureau of Labor Statistics still used 1967's prices as the base, the cost of the same items would have been $466.50.
