Roanoke's daughters to help parents work

Some Roanoke-area girls who are absent from school Thursday could have a good excuse: They'll be at work with their parents, part of the annual "Take Our Daughters to Work" observance.

At Hollins College, 13 employees plan to participate in the program founded four years ago by the Ms Foundation for Women in New York to let young girls see the world of work. Girls deserve the special attention the day provides, the foundation said, because as teen-agers they often have lower expectations of themselves and receive less attention in school than do boys.

Hollins employees are bringing their children, young relatives or friends to work with them, and plan to give them tasks in the morning. After lunch, the youngsters will try to scale a climbing wall on campus - a recreational outlet for faculty members and students - then go swimming or watch a horseback-riding class, said Tina Rolen, of the campus career development center.

State to inspect farmers' scales

The Virginia Office of Weights and Measures will certify scales at the Roanoke and Salem farmers' markets this week.

The testing is free and is required of anyone planning to sell at the Roanoke, Salem or Vinton farmers' markets, or from trucks or residences in Roanoke, Salem, and the counties of Roanoke, Craig, Botetourt and Floyd.

Wednesday, testing will be held at the Salem Farmers' Market from 8 a.m. until noon and at the Roanoke City Market from 1-5 p.m. Thursday, the testing will be at Roanoke in the morning and Salem in the afternoon. The times reverse again Friday.
