Shenandoah Life Insurance Co. began work Monday on the first phase of a planned five-year renovation of its Roanoke headquarters.
Work on the Brambleton Avenue building was scheduled to start last January but was held up by engineering delays, said Pearl Gearhart, vice president-human resources. She declined to say how much the company is spending on updating the 47-year-old structure.
President Robert W. Clark said the building is outdated.
"The integration of high technology, modern work-flow processes and a team-based management structure require some significant changes to the building's interior," he said.
The first phase, which will be completed in mid-August, involves major roof repairs and a new heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system. It also includes a new security system. R.L. Price Construction Co. is the contractor.
Subsequent phases will cover one part of the building each year for another four years. Those phases will provide more-functional work space.
Motley + Associates, a Roanoke architectural firm, developed the overall plan.
