The Bedford County Board of Supervisors has approved a $79.3 million budget for the 1996-97 fiscal year and a 5-cent increase in real estate tax rates.
With Supervisor Dale Wheeler opposed, the board voted 6-1 last week to increase the county's budget by 10 percent from $72.1 million this year. The county's real estate tax rate will rise from 44 cents to 49 cents per $100 of assessed value. Tax bills due June 5 will be figured at the new rate.
In last-minute cuts, the supervisors voted to slice $1 million in local funds to county schools. Of the School Board's final $48.3 million budget, $13.3 million will be local money. Wheeler favored an alternative package with bigger cuts.
The budget is less than the $82.9 million initially called for. If that amount had been approved, real estate tax rates could have risen as much as 24 cents.
