Former Gov. Douglas Wilder, who said he was roughed up by a security guard at Raleigh-Durham International Airport last March, has settled his $5 million lawsuit against USAir Inc. and the security firm.
Attorneys notified Richmond Circuit Court officials Friday that the case, scheduled to go to trial Monday, had been settled. Details of the settlement were not made available.
Wilder said that on March 7, 1995, after a clip on his suspenders set off a metal detector at the airport, an employee of Globe Airport Security Services Inc. grabbed him around the throat and slammed him against the wall.
When he tried to read guard Ferdinand Sloan's name tag, Sloan attacked him, Wilder said, and other Globe employees had to pull Sloan away. Sloan was fired the same day.
Wilder's suit also originally named the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority and Sloan, but they were dismissed after Richmond Circuit Judge T.J. Markow ruled that Virginia courts had no jurisdiction over them.
