Best-selling author Hugh Carpenter will prepare recipes from his newest cookbooks, "Hot Wok" and "Hot Chicken," for two cooking classes at Provisions Gourmet in Hunting Hills Plaza. The menu for the classes, to be held Monday and Tuesday, will include stir-fry beef tenderloin in spicy tangerine sauce; stir-fry shrimp with coconut, basil and chilies; smoked chicken salad with toasted pecans and sweet grilled pears; Jamaican baked chicken with chilies, coconut milk and mint; and sauteed chicken with vermouth and shiitake mushrooms.
Carpenter, who also wrote "Pacific Flavors," "Fusion Food Cookbook" and "Chopstix," defines "hot" as "full of flavor, new and beautiful, and not necessarily spicy." The gourmet teaches approximately 110 classes a year across the United States and says that his light, easy-to-prepare meals are perfect for modern fast-paced and health-conscious lifestyles.
Monday's class will meet from 6-9 p.m.; Tuesday's will begin at 10 a.m. Either session costs $45. To register, call 776-3264.
Wine Society meeting
Australian wines, from the fruity, smooth Chardonnays discovered a decade ago to the increasingly popular reds, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignons, will be sampled at Thursday's meeting of the Roanoke Valley Wine Society.
The tasting, from 7-9 p.m. in the upper room of Corned Beef & Co., Roanoke, costs $12 per person, and includes bread, cheese and an appetizer chosen to accompany the wines.
You needn't be a member to attend, nor are reservations required. For information, call 992-3285.
