The city and architects from Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern unveiled plans Tuesday for a $1.8 million linear walkway that could get off the drawing boards later this year and be opened to the public by the end of 1997. The 1,800-foot proposed walkway - punctuated by brick and stone plazas - would connect the Roanoke City Market with the Virginia Museum of Transportation. Initial plans call for lighting, some landscaping, water fountains and trash receptacles. Along with increased parking, future plans call for extensive plantings, benches, small storm shelters and a tower connecting to the First Street Bridge. Story on C5.
