The premiere of a stage adaptation of Sharyn McCrumb's recent book, "If I'd Killed Him When I Met Him ... ," is being performed at the Reynolds Homestead.
The novel was adapted by Elizabeth Courtney and is being presented by the Blue Ridge Arts and Theatre Society.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. tonight through Saturday and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students, and can be reserved by calling 694-7181. A few will be sold at the door.
The story involves three possible murders stretching from Civil War times to the present. A gravestone in this region of Virginia provides an eerie link between a mysterious death of a man in the 1860s and of a modern-day backwoods preacher who defies tradition by taking two wives. Two other deaths stem from a bitter divorce between a prominent Roanoke lawyer and his off-the-wall ex-wife.
The book was the eighth to feature McCrumb's amateur detective, Elizabeth MacPherson. The cast also includes her lawyer-brother, Bill, and his feminist firebrand law partner, A.P. Hill.
McCrumb, who lives in Shawsville, will attend Thursday's performance. Copies of the novel will be available for sale at a discount price.
