VMI'S PRINCE AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP

VMI basketball player Bobby Prince has been awarded a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship by the NCAA.

Prince, who led the Southern Conference in free-throw shooting and set school records for assists and steals last season, is one of five Division I basketball student-athletes to receive the prestigious scholarship. The former Lord Botetourt High School star holds a cumulative 3.95 grade point average and will graduate with a degree in civil engineering in May.

Prince, who was named to the GTE Academic All-America third team in March, is the ninth VMI student-athlete to receive an NCAA postgraduate scholarship.

BASEBALL VCU fights off Radford rally

Virginia Commonwealth scored five times in the top of the ninth inning to overcome Radford 9-8 Wednesday at Demon Center Park in Radford.

Jake Anthony's bases-loaded singled highlighted the inning for the Rams (28-17), who had to hold on as the Highlanders (16-25) scored two in the bottom of the ninth. Eric Hungate doubled home Jim Thomas for one run and pinch-hitter Chad Gordon doubled home Hungate before Jeff Collins flied out to end a game which featured 29 hits, 11 errors - six by Radford - and nine pitchers.

* Freshman Jason Babcock went 2-for-5, drove in four runs, including a three-run homer to help Virginia Tech rally from a five-run deficit and knock off West Virginia 14-11 in Blacksburg.

Tech (29-19) trailed 7-2 before Babcock's homer in the fifth inning made the score 7-5. Tech took the lead in the sixth on Austin Rappe's two-run triple and Kris Turberville's sacrifice fly. The Hokies, who finished the Mountaineers (20-21) with six runs in the seventh, also got three hits and two RBI from Josh Herman (William Byrd).

Hall tapped for Longwood honor

Nikki Hall of Salem was named Longwood College's Female Athlete of the Year at the school's annual athletic awards program.

Hall, a former Glenvar athlete who earned honorable mention Division II All-America honors in women's basketball this season, led the Lancers to a 22-7 record and their second straight berth in the NCAA Division II tournament. She averaged 16 points, 5.1 rebounds and four assists for a team that went 18-0 in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference. Hall, a junior, was named first-team All-CVAC, first-team Virginia Sports Information Directors All-State and GTE Academic All-District.

* Former University of Virginia standout basketball player Tammi Reiss has resigned from her position as assistant women's basketball coach at UVa. Reiss is leaving after over three years as a coach to pursue other career opportunities.

The Eldred, N.Y. native, who graduated from Virginia in 1992 with a degree in sport management, helped guide the Cavaliers to three consecutive Final Four appearances in 1990-92.

* Junior attackman Ande Jenkins tied Washington and Lee single-game records with eight goals and 12 points in the Generals' 29-3 win over Shenandoah in a men's lacrosse game at Winchester. Jenkins, who has 101 goals in his career, became the sixth W&L player to score 100 goals in a career.

The 29 goals tied a Generals record set in 1993 against Virginia Wesleyan.

* Tim Fleming and Adam Jackson each scored five goals as Roanoke rolled past Virginia Wesleyan 19-3 in a men's lacrosse game in Virginia Beach.

With the win, the Maroons captured the Old Dominion Athletic Conference regular-season championship.

* Hampden-Sydney's Berk Jolly was named the ODAC golfer of the year and his coach, Bill Tornabene, was the coach of the year, by a vote of conference coaches.

Jolly won the ODAC title Tuesday and was a medalist four times in his career. Tornabene led the Tigers to its second ODAC team title and first since 1986. Tommy Dudley and Scott Miller of Washington and Lee also were named to the all-ODAC team.

* Virginia Tech swept Lynchburg College 10-5 and 9-1 in a softball doubleheader at Blacksburg. Sara Rowley had three hits in the first game for Tech (16-30). Tina Diamond tossed a three-hitter to pick up the win in the second game. Lynchburg is 29-10.

* Three Ferrum players - pitcher Jimmy Hamilton, designated hitter Patrick Muncher, and outfielder Pat Daly - were named to the Dixie Conference all-tournament team.

Hamilton went 2-0 in the tournament with 13 strikeouts. Muncher was 4-for-21 with two homers and five RBI and Daly was 9-for-22 with nine RBI.

* Ferrum College held its spring sports banquet, honoring student athletes from nine varsity sports.

Among the winners were: Marcus Toney (Magna Vista), most valuable player, basketball; Michael Hunter (Alleghany) offensive player of the year, basketball; Kia Williams, most valuable player, women's basketball; Kim English (Staunton River), Pyramid Award, women's basketball; Marlo Ferguson-Jamison (Magna Vista), Teammate Award, women's basketball; Julie Shifflett, most valuable player, softball; Chris Powers (Staunton River), most valuable player, men's tennis; and T.J. Oakes, "One for All", cheerleading. Softball player Roben Sutphin, who owns nine school records, and cheerleader Slone Hodges were recipients of the President's Cup.

* Chip Sullivan, golf pro at Hanging Rock Golf Club, lost to Rick Schuller of Chantilly National Golf & Country Club 1 up in the quarterfinals at the Middle Atlantic PGA Match Play Championship held in Stafford.

Schuller advances to the final match where he will face Wayne DeFrancesco of Woodholme Country Club.
