Kathryn Haynie Parker, departing executive director of Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge Inc., on Wednesday received the New Century Women's Award.
The new citation was conceived by a group of professional women in the Roanoke Valley, the New Century Council, Hollins College and the Blue Ridge Business Journal to recognize women who fulfill work or civic responsibilities while also having a family.
Parker became its first recipient, having been judged along with 31 other nominees by a committee led by Lt. Gov. Don Beyer.
In 18 years at Planned Parenthood, she rose from the job of family planning counselor to the top post. She oversaw four clinics, 48 employees and a $2.1 million budget. This is her last week, as she has resigned and moved to Charlottesville to be with her new husband.
"When Kathy saw a need in this community, she did whatever it took to meet it: cajoling board members, pursuing funds, persuading partners to join in and make things happen," wrote Charlotte Porterfield, chairman of Planned Parenthood's board.
Warner Dalhouse, chairman of the board of First Union National Bank of Virginia, wrote: "She would be an excellent role model for most of the men I have ever known as they have tried to identify the true character of leadership."
