BALL, Pearl Elizabeth Kesting, 77, went peacefully to be with Jesus at her home in Blue Ridge on Tuesday, April 23, 1996. She was a member of Peace Presbyterian Church, and a charter member of Fairlawn Presbyterian Church. She was the widow of John Thomas Ball, Sr. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John and Nell Ball, Jr., Botetourt; daughter and son--in-law, Judith and Chester Jones, Blue Ridge; brother, Walter Kesting, Roanoke; sisters, Ruth McLaughlin, Bluefield, W. Va., Esther Meyer, Inverness, Fla., Kathleen and Weldon Wheeling, Garden City, S.C.; sister-in-law, Lucille Kesting, Raleigh, N. C.; four grandchildren, Tony Ball and wife Tammy, Lakeworth, Fla., Rebecca Covert and husband John, Troutville, Kathy Storey and husband Ben, Roanoke, Debby Stanley and husband Mike, Buchanan; two step-grandchildren, Holly Ham and husband Allan, of Roanoke, Drew Taliaferro, Salem. She was known as ""Granny Pearl'' to seven great-grandchildren, Johnny, Josh, Fain, Joey, Michael, Stone and Dallas; and many more family and special friends who loved and enjoyed her. BREWSTER, Ursula Mary, of Richfield, Conn., formerly of Roanoke, Va., died Tuesday, April 23, 1996. She was born in Sudbury, Ontario, January 22, 1942, the daughter of Dr. Robert Orange and Ursula Brennan Orange. She was graduated from Mary Mount College and she received a BA degree in history from Saint Michaels College at the University of Toronto in 1964. She received a Master's Degree in Social Work at Saint Patrick's College at Carleton University, Ottawa in 1966. While completing her field traini ng at the Children's Guidance Center in Waterbury, Conn., she met Carroll W. Brewster, a lawyer in New Haven, whom she later married. In 1969, when he was appointed Dean of Dartmouth College, she moved to Hanover, N.H. and taught at the Dartmouth Medical School as an assistant professor in the department of psychiatry from 1969-1975. She was the first Director of the Mascoma Outreach Program of the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, which made resources of the hospital available to families and children in towns nearby. She moved to Roanoke, Va. in 1975, when her husband was appointed President of Hollins College. There she was a Lecturer in Social Work and practiced clinical social work. In 1982, she and her family moved to the President's House at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y. Between then and 1991, she served the colleges as Lecturer in Social Work and as a member of the counseling staff at the Hubbs Infirmary. She was on the board of the Smith Opera House. She received the Raymond Sidney Jackson and Alice Dahl Jackson Prize for her ``contributions to the health and well-being of the people of Hobart and William Smith Colleges"" in 1991. She and her family settled on their farm in Ridgefield, Conn. in 1991. She quickly became an active member of the community, leading the Women's Development Group at St. Stephen's Church and advising the lay ministers. In addition, she served on the board of the Hanahoe Memorial Children's Clinic in Danbury, and had a small private practice in social work. She is remembered by friends as a woman of strength and integrity, wit, warmth, and grace. She was Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work. She is remembered by those who knew her professionally not only for her wise counsel but for the great personal interest she took in students and patients. She died in her home after an 11 year battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, Carroll Worcester Brewster, Executive Director of The Hole in the Wall Gang Fund; three children, Abraham Carroll Brewster, a graphic designer at the Oliphant Press in New York, Ursula Constant Brewster, a second year student at Dartmouth Medical School and Blandina Worcester Brewster, a sophomore at Yale College. There will be a memorial service at Saint Stephen's Church on Main Street in Ridgefield, Conn., 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 1996. In lieu of sending flowers, Mrs. Brewster wished that people would send donations to the The Hole in the Wall Gang Fund in New Haven, Conn. to benefit children with cancer from Chernobyl.

CURRIE, Leonard James, 82, of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, April 23, 1996, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. Graveside services will be held Friday, April 26, 1996, 11 a.m. at Westview Cemetery. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 27, 1996, 10 a.m. at the Virginia Tech War Memorial Chapel. The family requests no flowers, but contributions be made to the Leonard J. DUDLEY, William Edward, better known as ``Billy"", died early Wednesday morning, April 24, 1996, at his home in Dublin. Billy was born in Dublin on May 22, 1925 and was the second son of L. T. Dudley, Sr. and Mary Dudley Mustard. He was preceded in death by his older brother, L. T. Billy and his brother, Bobby, although specially handicapped men, are well known citizens of the Dublin Community. Billy filled his days visiting and ``running"" many businesses in town. He got the mail daily for Diane at Dublin Hardware, admired the furnishings at Ole Mill Furniture, visited with and helped folks shop at Wades. Morning, noon and night, he helped Doug manage the Dublin Pharmacy. He greeted people and showed patrons where the ``pretty items"" were located. When Billy greeted you, it was with a strong hug around the neck. He also told you who was talking about you and said that they said ``you ain't nothing."" If there was any news in Dublin, he knew it. He was a life-long member of Dublin United Methodist Church. Over the past sixty years, he has missed very few Sundays. For 45 years, he had perfect attendance in Sunday School and worship. His job each Sunday was to pick up the offering envelopes and take them to the Sunday School superintendent. Billy was an example for all in his love and enthusiasm for life. He enjoyed pretty things, flowers, visiting and talking with people, and helping around his home. He always made the cornbread and a dirty dish was washed almost before you were finished using it. The holidays found him making fresh wreaths for his friends and taking them to the shut-ins. He is survived by his sister, Mary Jane Dudley; and his younger brother, Bobby Dudley, both of Dublin. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening at Dublin United Methodist Church. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 26, 1996, at Dublin United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Patterson and the Rev. Henry Horton officiating. FELTY, Roy Kent Jr., 73, of Man, W. Va., formerly of Wytheville, Va., died Tuesday, April 23, 1996 in Man, W. Va.

He was a retired heavy equipment operator and was the son of the late Roy K. Sr. and Vaden Gregory Felty. He is survived by sister and brother-in-law, Jean F. and T. Owen Umberger, Wytheville, Va.; brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Delores Felty, St. Paul, Minn.; special friends, Glenna and Melvin Wiley and Amber Wiley all of Man, W. Va. FULCHER, Ola Patteson, 92, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, April 24, 1996. She was the widow of Frank P. Fulcher. Mrs. Fulcher was preceded in death by three daughters, Joyce Elva Fulcher, Juanita Fulcher Crozier, and Dr. Phyllis Fulcher Byrd. She was a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church, where she was also a member of the Friendship Class. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Corinne F. and R. Edward St.George, Roanoke; two grandchildren, Detria C. Shinn and William Thomas Crozier, both of Roanoke; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one brother, Norman B. Patteson, Amherst; three sisters, Mrs. Theo P. Brockman, Miss Elva P. Patteson, both of Amherst, Mrs. Claudia P. GRAY, Evelyn Marie Lewis, 64, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, April 22, 1996. She was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, James W. and Cynthia Gray, Houston, Texas; four sisters, Florence Howard, Rosa (Willie) Brewer, Cora (James) Sullivan, and Lois (Phillip) Bolden; seven brothers, Charles (Octavia) Lewis, Jessie (Elizabeth) Lewis, Roy (Christeen) Lewis, all of Roanoke, Richard (Alverta) Lewis, Christiansburg, Herman (Margaret) Lewis, Roanoke, John (Mary) Lewis, Silver Spring, Md.; Stafford (Minnie) Lewis; two grandsons, Anthony and Rayton Gray of Roanoke; three great-granddaughters; sister-in-law, Cora Lee Lewis; two devoted friends, Frances Smith and Gracie Martin, all of Roanoke; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. HAIRSTON, Mary Lou Petty, 86, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 1996 at Roanoke Memorial Hosptal. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mack Hairston; three daughters, Iola Burks, Jean Cook, and Josephine Forrest; and one son, Joseph Hairston. She is survived by two daughters, Maxine (Eddie) Powell, Mary Lee Price; one son, Bernard (Wallace) Hairston; daughter-in-law, Magie Ruth Hairston; one sister, Beatrice Randolph; one brother, Othello Petty; 34 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. JOHNSTON, Clara Edith, 72, of Eggleston, died Tuesday, April 23, 1996, in a Pearisburg hospital. She was born July 31, 1923, at Berton, the daughter of the late Ernest Otey and Daisy Viola Hamblin Johnston. She is survived by her husband, William Preston Johnston; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Odell Johnston, Carroll Johnston, Jerry and Barbara Johnston, all of Eggleston; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. LAWRENCE, Roman 83, of Salem, died Wednesday, April 24, 1996. He was born in Floyd Co. and had lived in Salem for most of his life. He had retired from the Tread Corporation as a construction manager after many years of service. He was a Primitive Baptist and survivors include, his wife, Mary Lou Lawrence; sons and daughters-in-law, G. Leland and Jean Lawrence, S. O'neal and Margaret Law rence, all of Salem; grandchildren, Ginger Harger, Mannassas, Robert and Brian Lawrence, and their mother Rebecca Lawrence, all of Salem. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 27, 1996 at 11 a.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel, Salem with the Elders Veldon Linn and Thomas Mann officiating. MARTIN, Basil Douglas Sr., (``Rip''), 54, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, April 20, 1996. Basil was a native of Roanoke, and upon his graduation from Lucy Addison High School, Class of 1959, he furthered his education, receiving a B.S. from Central State College and a D.D.S. from Meharry Medical College. Dr. Martin later practiced dentistry in Lynchburg, Washington, Pa., and Jamaica, N.Y. He also volunteered his services locally at the Bradley Free Clinic. Prior to Dr. Martin's dentistry career, he taught school in Little Washington, N.C., and researched at Patuxent Agricultural Research Center in Patuxent, Md. In addition to his educational accomplishments and career, Basil was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and W. M. Grand Lodge Masons of Pennsylvania. He enjoyed golfing and was a licensed pilot. Basil was preceded in death by his parents, Basil and Beulah Bailey Martin. Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, Basil and Portia Martin, Clarion, Pa., Beaufort ""Shoan'' Martin, Roanoke; one devoted sister, Joan Martin Hairston, Roanoke; two grandchildren, Jordan and Jasmine Martin, Clarion, Pa.; four nephews; two aunts; two uncles; and many cousins and friends. PRUNTY, Laverne Hunter, 65, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, April 24, 1996 at Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem. She was a graduate of Armstrong High School and St. Phillips School of Nursing and was employed as LPN at Burrell Memorial Hospital for 13 years and retired from the VA Medical Center, Salem after 25 years of service. She was married to the Rev. Dr. Alfred S. Prunty and was a faithful member of the Ministers' Wives Alliance. Survivors include her husband, Rev. Dr. Alfred S. Prunty, Roanoke; one daughter, Melissa P. Kemp; one grandson, Jesse Kemp both of Canton, Ohio; one sister, Mrs. Willie M. PUCKETT, Marvin Lesley Sr., 58, of Bedford, died Tuesday, April 23, 1996, at Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Roanoke on February 5, 1938, a son of the late Matthew Luke Puckett and Callie Mae Sigmon Puckett. He was a retired taxi cab driver, and was a member of Bethel Light House Church. He is survived by his wife, Ann Lewis Hamilton; four sons, Marvin L. Puckett Jr., John Henry Hamilton, Matthew Stewart Hamilton, and Nicholas Kyle Hamilton; two daughters, Alaina Kathryn Hamilton, Mercedes Briann Hamilton; a brother, Henry Shelton Puckett; a sister, Dorothy M. REARDON, Shirley Bennington, 61, of Lexington, died Tuesday, April 23, 1996, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Lexington. She was born in Rockbridge County November 6, 1934, daughter of the late David Henry Bennington and Hassie Virginia Knick Bennington. She was retired from Burlington Industries of Glasgow, and was a member of Lexington Baptist Church. Surviving are one son, John J. Reardon, Roanoke; four sisters, Hazel Morris, Newton, Mass., Mary Stascia, Rockford, Ill., Lucille Dipietro, Greenwood, Del., Pauline B. Chittum, Lexington. ROSE, Elizabeth E., 92, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, April 21, 1996. STUMP, Alvin Lester Sr., 84, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, April 24, 1996, after a brief illness. He was retired from the Norfolk & Western Railway as a Reaudit Clerk after 47 years of service and was also a watch maker. Mr. Stump was a li felong member of Calvary Baptist Church and was the widower of Martha Harvey Stump. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Alvin L. UNDERWOOD, Myrtle Brogan, 89, of Pilot, died Wednesday morning, April 24, 1996 in the Lewis-Gale Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alton P. Underwood, and son, Calvin C. Underwood. Surviving are two daughters and son-in-law, Peggy and D. L. YOUNG, Homer F., 75, of Buchanan, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 1996. He was a U. S. Army Air Corp Veteran of WWII and a member of Faith Baptist Church in Fincastle. He is survived by wife, Susan B. Young; daughters, Sherie E. Portman, Kristie E. Young; sons, Larry F. Young, Cary W. Young, Kevin S. Young, Craig E. Young; five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday April 26, 1996 at Oakey's North Chapel wi th Reverend Richard Frampton officiating. Interment will follow in Fair View Cemetery, Buchanan. YOUNG, Nora Hite, 97, of Boones Mill, born February 17, 1899, died Wednesday, April 24, 1996, at her home. She attended Oak Grove Church of the Brethren and was preceded in death by her husband, Harry B. Young. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Erlyene Hite of Route 1, Boones Mill; grandchildren, Gary and Sondra Hite, Brenda Hite, all of Roanoke, Bruce and Debbie Hite of Salem, Ralph Hite of Boones Mill, George Hite of Roanoke; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday in the Flora Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Curtis English officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Roanoke.
