IN SCHOOL

ROANOKE CITY SCHOOLS and COMMUNITY SCHOOL recently competed at the Virginia Scholastic Chess Championships in Pulaski.

In the K-3 primary division, Community School won second place with team members Alexander Corcoran, Alex Hincker, Chris Hincker, Becca Mikulas, Corban Smith, Brandon Whitten and sponsor Russell Potter, United States Chess Federation National Master.

Fishburn Park WEB Elementary Magnet School won fifth place with Gregory Mobley, Christopher Mobley, Craig Kafua, Allyn Hughes and sponsor Gina Gray.

Raleigh Court Elementary won second place in the K-6 elementary section with team members John Ellmore, Adam Tanner, Merideth Stafford, Phillip Marlles, Nicholas Byrd and sponsor David Tanner.

Fishburn Park won fourth place in the same division with John Mobley, Stephen Monar, Jake Hughes, Tom Rancy, and sponser Gina Gray. Individual winners were Phillip Marlles, sixth place; John Mobley, eighth place; and Adam Tanner, ninth place.

In the K-9 junior high division, James Madison Middle School won second place. Team members are Justin Marlles, Jessie Hsing, Mark DiProsperis, Floyd Welton, Christopher Clements, Allison Holt, Mary Holt, John Anderson, and sponsor Eva Jirouit. Patrick Henry High School won fourth place with Lyle Durkee, Stephen Ellis, Robert Van Doren, Yvette Phelps, Christopher Duncan, Bockenzic Duckett, and sponsor Sandy Garst. Individual winners were Justin Marlles, sixth place; Jessie Hsing, eighth place; and Mary C. Holt, 10th place.

ROANOKE SCHOOL SYSTEM has announced the winners in the Western Virginia Regional Science Fair recently held at Hollins College.

AMY WOOD a student in the health assistant class at Arnold R. Burton Technology Center placed first in prepared speaking during the Health Occupations Students of America state competition.

KATE NETTLES, daughter of John and Jane Nettles of Roanoke, received first place and $250 during the 14th Annual Young Artists' Awards Competition held at Hollins College.

Nettles, an oboist and a senior at Cave Spring High School, performed "Troisieme Solo De Clarinet" by Charles Colin.
