PATRICK HENRY and WILLIAM FLEMING HIGH SCHOOL students recently won awards at the state Leadership Conference.

Patrick Henry winners are: Yaron Rachlin, first place, international marketing manual; Chris Duncan, first place, food marketing; Kia Price and Jaime Brooks, delegates.

Those from Fleming are: Nicole Paxton, Shauna Walker and Kara Jones, third place, civic consciousness project; Nicole Paxton, DECA student Merit Award; Terrence Williams, delegate.

Patrick Henry High School chapter awards - third place, social intelligence; Preferred Stock Award, comprehensive annual report; Virginia DECA Day Recognition.

William Fleming High School chapter awards - third place, vocational understanding project; chapter merit award; preferred award - annual report; Virginia DECA Day Recognition.

ROLAND E. COOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL has announced the names of students who received state recognition for their participation in the National Career Development program. The program promotes career development through poster making and poetry writing.

The winners are:

Poster making, primary division: Travis Slone, second place; Crystal Hill, third place. Intermediate division: Carlton Mabe, third place.

Poetry writing, primary division: Jeffrey Wood, first place; Cameron Clark, second place; Wednesday Young, third place. Intermediate division: Brandon Reynolds, second place; Amanda Bruce, third place.

HILLS DEPARTMENT STORE named several Roanoke-area students as Outstanding Citizens for the months of January and February. Its Outstanding Citizen program recognizes and rewards students' academic and personal accomplishments to help build their self-esteem. Each student receives a certificate of achievement and coupon for a free item at Hills' Snack Express.

CAVE SPRING HIGH SCHOOL recently announced the names of several students selected to participate in the 1996-97 Virginia All-State Band and Orchestra. They are: Whitney Hanes, first chair flute, orchestra division; Kate Nettles, second chair oboe, orchestra division; and Brad Weaver and Ali Citsaz, alternates, band division. The students performed in a concert at Blacksburg High School April 13.

ROANOKE CITY SCHOOLS and COMMUNITY SCHOOL recently competed at the Virginia Scholastic Chess Championships in Pulaski.

In the K-3 primary division, Community School won second place with team members Alexander Corcoran, Alex Hincker, Chris Hincker, Becca Mikulas, Corban Smith, Brandon Whitten and sponsor Russell Potter, United States Chess Federation National Master.

Fishburn Park WEB Elementary Magnet School won fifth place with Gregory Mobley, Christopher Mobley, Craig Kafua, Allyn Hughes and sponsor Gina Gray.

Raleigh Court Elementary won second place in the K-6 elementary section with team members John Ellmore, Adam Tanner, Merideth Stafford, Phillip Marlles, Nicholas Byrd and sponsor David Tanner.

Fishburn Park won fourth place in the same division with John Mobley, Stephen Monar, Jake Hughes, Tom Rancy, and sponser Gina Gray. Individual winners were Phillip Marlles, sixth place; John Mobley, eighth place; and Adam Tanner, ninth place.

In the K-9 junior high division, James Madison Middle School won second place. Team members are Justin Marlles, Jessie Hsing, Mark DiProsperis, Floyd Welton, Christopher Clements, Allison Holt, Mary Holt, John Anderson, and sponsor Eva Jirouit. Patrick Henry High School won fourth place with Lyle Durkee, Stephen Ellis, Robert Van Doren, Yvette Phelps, Christopher Duncan, Bockenzic Duckett, and sponsor Sandy Garst. Individual winners were Justin Marlles, sixth place; Jessie Hsing, eighth place; and Mary C. Holt, 10th place.

ROANOKE CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS announced the winners of the Regional Future Business Leaders of America competition held at Radford University.

AMY WOOD, a student in the health assistant class at Arnold R. Burton Technology Center, placed first in prepared speaking during the Health Occupations Students of America state competition.

ARNOLD R. BURTON TECHNOLOGY CENTER recently announced the names of its students who won first place in the VICA District VII Skill Contest recently held in Blacksburg. They are: Denny Akers, bricklayer; Eric Bell, motorcycle service technology; Andrew Donahue, air-cooled gas engines; Jennifer Fowler, poster; Jonathan Holland, occupational display; Jessica Lopez, essay; Billy McIlwraith, principles of technology; James Nutter, job interview; Judd Poulter, house construction; Shawn Preston, prepared speech; Derrick Tunstall, masonry; William Woodruff, extemporaneous speaking; Greg Peters, precision machining.

These winners will go to the state contest in May.

KATE NETTLES, daughter of John and Jane Nettles of Roanoke, received first place and $250 during the 14th Annual Young Artists' Awards Competition held at Hollins College.

Nettles, an oboist and a senior at Cave Spring High School, performed "Troisieme Solo De Clarinet" by Charles Colin.

NATIONAL LEAGUE OF JUNIOR COTILLIONS, Roanoke Valley Chapter recently announced those who have been named "Best Mannered Teacher" of the 1995-96 school year.

Recipients of the award are: Perry Manning of Andrew Lewis Middle School, Connie Mitchell of Botetourt Intermediate School, Karen Campbell and Danielle Wise of Cave Spring Junior High School, Lucia Craighead of East Salem Elementary, Charlotte Strickler of Grandin Court Elementary, Lynda Mauney of Glenver Junior High, Mary Jane Saunders of Herman L. Horn Elementary, Anne Larimer of Oak Grove Elementary School, Karen Martin of Penn Forest Elementary, Mary Jane Callahan, of Roanoke Catholic School, Janice Shelton of Roanoke Valley Christian School, Myra Crew of South Salem Elementary, and Lesli Adams of Woodrow Wilson Middle School. Award winners were nominated by Junior Cotillion student essays. The criteria for the selection included respect for students and acting as a good role model.

MARI CROAN, a senior at Salem High School and BRAD REA, a senior at Glenvar High School, will each receive $1000 Sam Walton Scholarships from Wal-Mart.

Croan and Rea were chosen because of their strong academic performance, involvement in school activities and work experiences.

Croan will attending James Madison University and Rea will attend the University of Virginia.

KIMBERLY CROWDER, of Buchanan was selected to attend the Washington Journalism Conference in Washington D.C. in April. Kimberly, a junior at James River Senior High School was one of 350 outstanding high school journalist chosen to attend the conference sponsored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council.

During the conference the students will participate in seminars and workshops led by leaders in the fields of print, radio and television journalism.
