NEW SYSTEM RANKS JUNIOR GOLFERS

The Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame has devised a junior golfer rankings system to determine the player of the year and the 11 other selections to the 1996 Bob McLelland Golf Team.

The system, which will award points to junior players in the area for their performance and participation in various events, was devised by a committee consisting of high school coaches, club professionals and Hall of Fame organizers.

Organizers hope the new system will help promote junior golf, encourage more participation in local and regional tournaments, and consistently recognize juniors throughout the spring, summer and fall.

The rankings system will consist of a two-tiered formula.

Tier 1 events will pay a total of 200 points to the top-10 finishers in an event (200 points for first, 180 for second, 160 for third, etc.).

Tier 1 events include: Hall of Fame; VSGA State Junior qualifying; Andrew Haley Memorial; USGA qualifying; Bobby Bowers Invitational; Virginia-West Virginia Team matches; Commonwealth Games; Peyton Memorial; Smith Mountain Lake Junior Open; Middle Atlantic Junior; Roanoke Valley City-County Junior; Scott Robertson Memorial; Virginia-Carolina Junior Team matches; and state high school tournaments.

Match-play events may be worth another 25 points per victory. Fourteen- and 15-year-old junior divisions will all be Tier 2 events.

Tier 2 events will be worth 100 points (100 for first, 90 for second, etc.). Tier 2 events include: high-school regular-season tournaments, district tournaments, regional tournaments, any USGA events not in Tier 1; any out-of-state tournaments (pending committee approval). Junior club champions also will receive points. The top six players on each team will be awarded points based on regular-season qualifying results.

All tournament results have to be submitted to rankings system committee Chairman Jerry English (540-345-0361) within 10 days of the conclusion of the event.

To be eligible for the rankings, the student must be enrolled in one of the 13 high schools in the Hall of Fame area, which includes Roanoke city, Roanoke County, Vinton, Salem, Botetourt County and Franklin County.

The top 12 finishers in points will be honored at the Hall of Fame's annual banquet in November. The No.1 finisher in points will automatically earn the Bob McLelland Player of the Year award.

McLelland, the late sports editor of the old Roanoke World-News, was an avid follower and supporter of junior golf.
