Workers to rally for job safety

A rally is scheduled tonight in Martinsville to press the need for greater job safety. The event is tied to Workers' Memorial Day, described as a national day of mourning for people killed or injured at work.

The service will begin at 6 in front of Martinsville City Hall. Organizers include the Concerned Citizens to Improve Workers Compensation, Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees, and Communications Workers of America.

The workers compensation group said 48 workers died in Virginia last year and 201,204 injuries were reported. For information about the event, call (540)632-0013.

Best Products names chairman

RICHMOND - Daniel H. Levy has been named chairman and chief executive officer of Richmond-based Best Products Co. He replaces Stewart M. Kasen, who said in February he was leaving. Levy, a vice chairman and chief operating officer at Montgomery Ward, has been a retail consultant since 1993.

Best emerged from bankruptcy protection two years ago but reported a $95.7 million annual loss in March. It plans to close 10 showrooms and has canceled plans to open nine stores. Best also plans to eliminate its fall catalog, a cornerstone of its format since 1957.
