BEDFORD MAN WHO ABDUCTED GIRL GETS 20 YEARS IN PRISON

A Bedford man will serve 20 years in prison for the abduction and attempted rape and sodomy of a 9-year-old girl.

Calvin McDaniel Snead, 27, was sentenced Friday to 70 years in prison with all but 20 suspended for the assault last June in a wooded area near the Bedford Science and Technology Center.

Before passing judgment on Snead, Bedford County Circuit Judge William Sweeney said: "Usually, when it gets to this point in the sentencing, I feel some pang of sympathy toward the defendant. However, I don't feel any sympathy at all toward Mr. Snead. None. None at all."

Snead pleaded guilty to all charges in the case last fall. At his preliminary hearing, police testified that the girl said Snead took her bicycle riding, then led her to a secluded wooded area, where he ordered her to disrobe.

Police later recovered threads at the scene that matched Snead's underwear. A medical examination of the girl revealed signs of sexual assault.
