Alcohol was a contributing factor in a Botetourt County crash that killed a Franklin County man and sent five others to the hospital two weeks ago, the Botetourt commonwealth's attorney said.
Kenneth Wayne Vaden, 38, who was killed in the crash, had a blood-alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit when he collided head-on with a car driven by David Walter Garst of Salem on April 10, Joel Branscom said. Vaden was speeding on the wrong side of Carvins Cove Road in a car owned by Wanda Zimmerman McRoy about 7:30 p.m. when the crash happened.
McRoy, of Roanoke, was a passenger in the car, along with Mark Wayne Barber and Mark Todd Giles, both also of Roanoke, and Charles Douglas Hagee of Salem. All of them, along with Garst, were taken to the hospital. No information was available on their conditions.
