BRIEFLY PUT . . . PLAYING POLITICS WITH SCHOOLS

DEMOCRATS, complains Gov. George Allen, are playing politics with their latest effort to get federal Goals 2000 funds for the state of Virginia. Can you imagine? Politics?

That is the charge against Reps. Rick Boucher and Jim Moran, who are working in Congress for a bill that would let localities apply directly for the money, sidestepping Allen's determined efforts to keep the state out of the program. "All of this is purely partisan political nonsense," the governor opined.

Well, yes - starting with the opening round, when the governor came out swinging against Goals 2000 money that the state is eligible to receive.

To hear him tell it, the modest sums involved are just a down-payment by the federal government to buy Virginia's soul. (Cheap.) That plays well with the right wing of the state GOP, which is to say it's a political point. Local school districts should be allowed to make their own judgments.
