Ali Oglesby scored five goals as top-seeded Roanoke College downed Randolph-Macon 15-5 Friday afternoon in Salem to advance to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's lacrosse championship game for the third straight year.
Oglesby tallied four goals in the first half as the Maroons built a 9-1 lead. Roanoke remained in control throughout the second half, allowing the Yellow Jackets three goals late in the game.
Junior attack Gayle Avery had three goals and two assists for the Maroons and Amanda Davidson added three goals. Alison Smith had three goals for Randolph-Macon.
Caitlin Sarkisian scored six goals as Lynchburg defeated Washington and Lee 14-7 in the other semifinal game.
The game remained close in the first half as Washington and Lee's Susie Creamer scored with 44 seconds left to tie the score at 5-5 at halftime. The teams traded goals in the second half until Lynchburg went on a 5-0 run to ice the game.
Cinnie Logan scored three goals for Washington and Lee.
Roanoke (11-2) will be shooting for its third consecutive ODAC title Sunday at 2 p.m. at Alumni Field in Salem, while Lynchburg (9-5) returns to the title game after a one-year absence.
In other lacrosse:
* Virginia Tech beat VMI 20-14 in the Star City Classic at River's Edge Sports Complex.
Brian Wilson scored two goals in a five-goal stretch for the Hokies as they broke a 9-9 tie and took a 14-9 lead. Wilson had six goals and four assists for the Hokies (13-3), and Brian Craighill had four assists.
VMI (6-7) was led by Joe Brockman with six goals and three assists.
ETC. Ferrum puts 8 on All-Dixie team
Eight Ferrum College baseball players have been named to the All-Dixie Conference team, led by player of the year Jimmy Hamilton.
Hamilton, a junior pitcher, is 10-1 with a 2.10 ERA.
Joining Hamilton on the first team were senior first baseman Jason Wilson, senior second baseman David Jones, senior outfielder Luther Headley and sophomore outfielder Pat Daly.
Making the second team were junior shortstop Todd Cunningham, sophomore catcher Riley Hodges and freshman third baseman Brian Goodrich.
* Ferrum swept a doubleheader from Olivet in Marietta, Ohio.
Chris Allen (5-4) tossed a six-hitter in the first game. He struck out five as the Panthers won 10-1. Brian Goodrich had a homer and four RBI for Ferrum (31-7-1).
In the nightcap, Todd Cunningham and Ryan Brittle each had three RBI as the Panthers won 11-8. Brittle and Jason Wilson each homered for Ferrum.
* In Charleston, S.C., severe thunderstorms and a drenched field caused Southern Conference officials to postpone the final two second-round games of the conference baseball tournament.
In two games completed before the rain, Furman beat Western Carolina 7-4 and Appalachian State downed Davidson 5-2. VMI will face East Tennessee State at 9 a.m. today.
* Virginia Tech's Tracey Shea finished 14th in the 3,000-meter run at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. Teammates Meredith Newby and Johli Carscallen were 16th and 19th respectively in the hammer throw.
* The Virginia Tech golf team shot a 323 at the Charleston National Country Club in intermittent rain during the first round of the Palmetto Intercollegiate Classic in Charleston, S.C. Thirty-six holes had been scheduled, but rain canceled the afternoon session.
Chip Glover posted a 78 and is in 18th place for the Hokies, who are 14 shots behind Virginia Commonwealth. Wake Forest is one stroke back at 310.
* The Roanoke RiverDawgs will face a club team from Chapel Hill, N.C., in an exhibition soccer game tonight at 7:30 at Cave Spring Junior High School. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students.
The RiverDawgs will open their second United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues season May 4 at 7:30 p.m. against the Jackson (Miss.) Chargers.
The Roanoke roster for tonight's exhibition includes three former Roanoke College stars (Aaron Ewert, Grayson Prillaman and Dustin Fonder), Radford's Ian Spooner and Edwardo Wissar, and former Virginia Tech star midfielder Eric McClellan.
Roanoke also will have a practice open to the public today at 11:15 a.m., also at Cave Spring Junior High.
