Romania's wedding of the decade began a day early when gold-medal gymnasts Nadia Comaneci and American Bart Conner were married in a civil ceremony ahead of their lavish church wedding Saturday.

Police sealed off a downtown section of Bucharest, and some 2,000 fans gathered outside the capital's stylish Army club to watch the proceedings on a giant television screen.

In keeping with Romanian practice, Comaneci, 34, and Conner, 38, were married first in a civil ceremony conducted by a City Hall official. After Conner kissed the bride, they signed the city hall register to seal their marriage.

Comaneci gained fame with her unprecedented perfect 10s at the 1976 Olympics. In the 1976 and 1980 Olympics, she won nine medals, five of them gold.

Conner won a gold medal in the parallel bars in 1984.

Macaulay Culkin's father slapped him in the face for refusing to clean up his room, so he called police.

Christopher ``Kit'' Culkin admitted to police that he slapped his son, and they referred the case to family court without filing charges, said Officer Noreen Murray, a police spokeswoman.

The 911 call was placed Thursday from the family's apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The 15-year-old star of the ``Home Alone'' movies did not require medical treatment, Murray said.

The fight comes during a nasty battle for custody of Macaulay and his six brothers and sisters.

Culkin, 50, and Patricia Brentrup, 41, lived together 20 years and had seven children. The couple split up last year, and their battle is largely a question of who will control Macaulay's $50 million fortune.
