N.H. students help clean up Ivanhoe
IVANHOE - Thirteen students from United Church of Christ in Concord, N.H., spent last week working in the Ivanhoe community in Wythe County doing yard work, cleaning up trash and helping older citizens with spring cleaning.
The Ivanhoe Civic League hosted the volunteers and provided evening entertainments, including a history night covering the community's past, craft demonstrations, and a farewell party. The students came to Ivanhoe through the Volunteers for Communities program which is based in Ivanhoe and is part of the Virginia Water Project in Roanoke.
Wytheville, county mull tax on cellular phones
WYTHEVILLE - Both Wythe County and the town of Wytheville are considering imposing a utility tax on cellular telephones for the coming year.
Wytheville Town Council heard the proposal last week, but took no action until it gets a draft of a tax ordinance from the town staff.
Wythe County is scheduled to hold a public hearing on its proposed cellular phone tax May 7.
"As we understand the law, if the county imposes the tax, it will be applicable to all county citizens including those in the town of Wytheville," Councilman John Jones said. "This would preclude the town from imposing the tax in the future."
