Nominees sought

BLACKSBURG - The Greater Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce's Retail Merchants Committee is accepting nominations for the Eugene Jones Small Business Service Award and the Small Business Person of the Year Award through May 4.

The awards will be presented May 14. Nomination forms are available in the chamber office on Jackson Street.

Nominees for the Eugene Jones Small Business Service Award should be "an individual who has contributed to the welfare or growth of small businesses the community and have been involved in other community programs," the chamber states.

Nominees for the Small Business Person of the Year Award should be someone who has contributed by maintaining and promoting growth in small business through either setting an example or through service to the small business community, according to the chamber.

Small businesses are those with fewer than 50 employees and are not affiliated with a publicly traded company.

Business award

RADFORD - The Radford Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for the Business Person of the Year Award through May 9.

Nominees should have "displayed exceptional accomplishments in his or her profession ... have demonstrated leadership with the business and/or professional community ... and have demonstrated a sense of responsibility to the community through involvement in civic activities," according to the chamber.

The award will be presented May 16.

Optometrist elected

WYTHEVILLE - Gordon W. Jennings, an optometrist in Wytheville, has been elected second vice president of the Southern Council of Optometrists.

Jennings was third vice president in 1995 and is past president of the Virginia Optometric Association. He is currently secretary of the Virginia State Board of Optometry and is a fellow of the Virginia Academy of Optometry.

Communicator honored

CHRISTIANSBURG - Christina Maccherone, president of Serendipity Communications, won seven awards in the Virginia Press Women's annual contest.

She won two first-place awards, one for a series of three environmental articles that appeared in Blue Ridge Business Journal, and one for a display advertisement in The Works, the alumni magazine for Virginia Tech's mechanical engineering department.

Maccherone also won three second-place awards and two third-place awards.

Log home dealer

BLACKSBURG - Deborah Porterfield of Blacksburg is the dealer for Heritage Log Home for Montgomery, Giles, Pulaski and Craig counties.

She is responsible for promotion, sales and servicing of the firm's log homes, and joins a nationwide network of more than 100 dealers.

The Gatlinburg, Tenn.-based company is one of the five biggest American designers and builders of log structures. It has constructed more than 5,000 buildings.
