A Henry County man was shot and killed Friday night during a fight involving four men in an acquaintance's driveway.
Richard Andrew Dillon, 39, of Collinsville was shot once in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Vincent M. Gregory, 40, of Martinsville was arrested after his release from Memorial Hospital of Martinsville-Henry County early Saturday. He is charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The charges carry a combined maximum sentence of 23 years in prison.
Sheriff's Investigator D.M. Sharpe said Gregory and Martinsville resident Robert Mawyer, 26, drove to a home on Virginia 627 about 9 p.m. after Mawyer had a phone conversation with an unnamed female resident there. The Sheriff's Office would not disclose the nature of the phone call.
Dillon and an unnamed man came outside, and a fight broke out, Sharpe said. Dillon was shot once in the head with a handgun. Mawyer was treated at Memorial Hospital for minor injuries and released.
Sharpe did not disclose the name of a man who accompanied Dillon from the unnamed woman's home, but did say he was not injured in the fight.
Gregory, the only person charged, was released from Henry County Jail on $5,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Henry County Circuit Court for a preliminary hearing May3.
The Sheriff's Office confiscated two handguns belonging to Gregory, Sharpe said, along with a steak knife, a baseball bat and a walking stick, all used as weapons in the fight.
The killing was the first in Henry County this year. The county had six slayings last year.
