A Christiansburg police officer shot a woman in the leg Saturday night after she pointed the rifle with which she threatened to kill herself at the officer.
Stella Arcaro was listed in stable condition at Columbia Montgomery Regional Hospital's intensive care unit Sunday night, a nursing supervisor said. Doctors performed surgery to repair a femur fracture and cleaned a calf wound.
A news release issued by Lt. Gary Brumfield said that Arcaro, 42, called 911 about 8:20 p.m. and told the dispatcher she was armed and considering suicide.
When officers arrived at Old Farm Village apartments, they could see Arcaro through a window and confirmed that she had a rifle, the release said.
About 9 p.m., officers heard a shot in the apartment. The release did not say whether Arcaro shot herself.
Arcaro then came out the rear of the apartment, pointing the rifle at an officer. She continued to walk toward the officer with the gun raised, the release said.
The officer fired and wounded Arcaro in the leg, according to the release.
The Christiansburg Police Department and the Virginia State Police are investigating the shooting, the release said.
Brumfield could not be reached for comment.
