A child died Sunday at Smith Mountain Lake in what the Bedford County Sheriff's Office described as an accidental drowning.
Sheriff Mike Brown said a child had died, but he could not offer information about the circumstances of the drowning. He said the Sheriff's Office had no immediate plans to file charges in the case.
The deputy notifying the family and handling the investigation could not be reached for comment Sunday night.
A Bedford County dispatcher said details of the drowning would be released today.
