ANDREWS, K. Dene, 84, of Independence, passed away Sunday, April 28, 1996 at Alleghany Memorial Hospital, Sparta, N.C. Born March 14, 1912 in Ennice, N.C. to John and Lena Choate Andrews. He was retired owner and operator of Independence Retread Company. Mr. Andrews served 17 years on Town Council for the Town of Independence, Va. and was the last charter member of the Independence Lions Club. He served 55 years as active and honorary member of Independence Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of Scout Committee of Boy Scout Troop #84, Independence, Va. Surviving include his wife, Stella Ward Andrews of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Patricia Andrews, Greensboro, N.C., Jerry and DeAnna Andrews, High Point, N.C.; three grandsons, Forrest Andrews, Seattle, Wash., Ward Andrews, Bryan Andrews both of Greensboro, N.C.; sister, Dorothy Maiorana, Hallandale, Fla. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, 1996 in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Brian Miller officiating. Interment will be in Independence Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Friends may call at the residence on Edgewood Drive at anytime. BEASLEY, Richard R., (``Slim""), 61, of Christiansburg, passed away Sunday, April 28, 1996 at his home. He was a retired welder and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the U.S. Navy. Survivors include his wife, Mary F. Beasley; three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael R. and Dorothy Beasley, Dublin, Mark R. and Rebecca Beasley and Kenneth E. and Melissa Beasley all of Christiansburg; three brothers, Edward Beasley, Troutville, Timothy Beasley, Virginia Beach and Gregory Beasley, Roanoke; two sisters, Betty B. Basham, Shawsville and Judy B. East, Salem; six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, 1996 at the Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with the Rev. Virgil McHone and the Rev. Robert Goldstein officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Christiansburg. BURNETT, Phyllis Marie, 62, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, April 25, 1996. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Garden of Prayer #7, with Elder Shadrach Brown officiating. Interment will be in the Burnett family cemetery, Stewartsville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.

BURNETTE, Marjorie Sarah, 89, of Roanoke, died Saturday, April 27, 1996, in the Roanoke United Methodist Home. She was born February 19, 1907, in LaGrange, Ind. She was a graduate of Radford College and taught the first grade at Forest Park Elementary School for 41 years until her retirement. She was a charter member of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church, a member of the Roanoke City Retired Teachers Association, a life member of the Virginia Retired Teachers Association and an emeritus member of Pilot International. Among her hobbies, for many years, were china painting and needle work, which she generously shared with others. She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Margaret Ella Burnette, and another sister, Daphene B. Campbell. Surviving are her sisters, Ruth B. Dickerson of Salem, Pauline B. Ramsey of Roanoke, Joyce B. Hankla and brother-in-law Alden S. Hankla of Dublin, and Glade Burnette of the home. She also is survived by nine nieces and nephews, and several great and great-great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Tuesday, April 30, 1996, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. D. Michael Meloy and the Rev. Bryan Oldham officiating. Entombment will be in Fern Cliff Abbey in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. CRANE, Beverly L., 84, of Roanoke, died Sunday, April 28, 1996. He was a member of the Garden City Baptist Church, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was a true son of a Confederate soldier. He also was a member of the Carola Choir and the DAV. Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Crane; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Jim Gordon of Chesterfield; three sons and daughters-in-law, James Wayne and Judy Crane of Bluefield, Beverly L. Jr. and Barbara Crane of Camden, S.C., and Anthony C. and Sharon Crane of Roanoke; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Alia Parrish, Carrie Crane and Margaret Crane of Roanoke, and a brother, Calvin Crane and wife Christine of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, 1996, with the Rev. Don McCaskill officiating. Interment will be in Franklin Memorial Park, Franklin County. DIXON, Mary Wymer, 80, of Vinton, passed away Saturday, April 27, 1996 at her home. She was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Frazier. Surviving are her husband, Charles Junior Dixon; three daughters and son-in-law, Joyce Keyes, Marion, Rita Hall, Vinton, Janet and Randy Bo wyer, Vinton; son and daughter-in-law, Larry E. and Wilma Frazier, Madison, Ala.; sisters, Elizabeth (Billie) Blankenship, Bland, Josephine Davidson, Marion; brother, Walter W. Wymer Sr., Pearisburg; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, 1996 with the Rev. John E. McKinney officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery. ENGEL, Frances Holiday, 80, of Blacksburg, died Friday, April 26, 1996. She was born in Detroit, Mich., on May 1, 1915, to the late Frank E. and Bessie Begg Holiday. She received her B.A. degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, and her M.S. degree from Auburn University in Auburn, Ala. Mrs. Engel's varied activities and accomplishments included serving as instructor in English and public speaking at both Auburn University and Virginia Tech; co-founder of the Virginia Tech Faculty Women's Club; President of the Virginia State Chapter of American Association of University Women; author of two books on the Philippine American Period; a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary Club International; recipient of Calesa Award of Service to the U.S.A. Girl Scouts Philippine District; and an ambassador's award by David O. Newsome, U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines, in 1978, for her untiring efforts to promote better understanding between Filipinos and Americans. Her extensive collections of important Philippine history and culture books have been donated to the Virginia Tech Library. Mrs. Engel is listed in ``Who's Who of American Women,"" and was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution. She was an active member of Blacksburg United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Ruben W. (``Charlie"") Engel; her three children, Nancy E. (John) Barlow of Rochester, N.Y., Bonnie E. (James) Hupton of Saratoga, Calif., and Col. William F. (Linda) Engel, U.S. Army, Fort Monroe; and eight grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Blacksburg United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 1, 1996. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, m emorial contributions be made to the R. W. and Frances H. HURLEY, Rev. John Daniel, 54, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord Sunday, April 28, 1996. He was presently employed at Fred Whitaker Company and associate pastor at the Good News Baptist Church in Roanoke City. Survivors include his wife, Cheryl S. Hurley; one son, Paul Wayne Hurley, Roanoke; two daughters, Rhonda L. Young and husband, Bill, Burlington, N.C., Tammie L. Collins, Roanoke; one grandson, John (J.C.) Collins Jr.; five brothers, Cecil Hurley, Salem, Raymond Hurley, Providence, N.C., Charles Hurley, Staunton, Robert Hurley, Mt. Clemons, Mich., and Wayne Hurley, Vinton; two sisters, Marie H. JESSEE, Clarence Sivon, 81, of Clinchfield Community, Cleveland, died Saturday, April 27, 1996 in a Roanoke, Va. hospital. He was a lifelong resident of the South Clinchfield Community and was a coal miner. Survivors include five sons, Jerry Jessee, Robert Jessee, Wayne Jessee, Lonnie Jessee all of Hollins, and Richard Jessee of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three daughters, Delores Sword of Louisa, Norma Mchone, Dorothy Catron both of Hollins; three brothers, Glenn Jessee of Lebanon, Henry Jessee and Frank Jessee Sr. of Bristol, Va.; one sister, Russell Breeding of South Clinchfield; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. MARTIN, Clarence E., Sr., 94, of 221 Pocahontas Street, Glasgow, departed this life at his residence on Friday, April 26, 1996. He was born in Axton to the late Phillip and Cassie Hairston Martin. He was the husband of Matalida Thompson Martin. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Clarence E. Martin Jr., Shirley Johnson, Faye Early and Brenda Hunt; a sister, Magalena Clark of Axton; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
