CHECKERED FLAG WAVES FOR LAWHORNE AT FCS

THE TRACK CHAMPION in 1993 and '94 wins the 100-lap Late Model Stock race Saturday night.

Dudley Lawhorne held off a pair of former track champions to win the Rentco/Comfort Homes 300 on Saturday night at Franklin County Speedway.

Lawhorne, the track champion in 1993 and '94, beat Dickie Wilson and Orvil Reedy to the finish line in the 100-lap Late Model Stock Car feature race. (Results in Scoreboard. B4.)

Don Pollack of Martinsville tried desperately to take the lead on the 99th lap, but a pair of flat tires had him struggling to hang on to a fourth-place finish.

Wilson and Reedy tangled in a three-wide attempt to pass Lawhorne, finishing second and third, respectively.

Jimmy Mullins of Collinsville, last week's winner, went to the pits for the night after hitting the wall on lap 52. Mullins was not injured in the crash, but a spectator was taken to a local hospital after being struck by a tire that flew off Mullins' car.

The Limited Sportsman division made its season debut, with Mike Dudley of Roanoke winning the race from the pole position. Leon Dalton of Floyd was second and Freddy Goff finished third.

In the Pure Stocks race, Red Hartman outlasted Jay Peery of Roanoke and Tom Dooley of Troutville.

In the Mini Stocks, Dennis Sloan of Rocky Mount held off Gary Joyce to win the 25-lap feature. Lewis Wagner was third.

Scott Foley was disqualified in the Rookie division for having an illegal camber tilt, making Steve Cannaday the winner. Second place went to Harlan Dalton and James Carr was third.

The Any Car race was won by Patrick Evans of Roanoke.
