MAROONS WIN ODAC IN LACROSSE

Lisa Franzino and Ali Ogelsby scored two goals each Sunday as the top-seeded Roanoke College women's lacrosse team beat Lynchburg 7-6 for its third straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament championship.

Roanoke (12-2) never trailed and led 6-2 with 14:50 left in the game, but Lynchburg (8-6) scored three straight goals, including two from Caitlin Sarkisian, to cut the deficit to 6-5 with 7:25 to play.

Franzino scored less than a minute later to make it 7-5, and the Maroons weathered a goal from Jill Smith with 1:08 left.

Sarkisian had one goal and one assist for the Hornets.

Freshman goalie Eileen Siegel made 10 saves for Roanoke, while Kathleen Harrington made 22 for Lynchburg.

BASEBALL Tech splits doubleheader

Virginia Tech's baseball team completed the Atlantic 10 Conference portion of its regular-season schedule by splitting a doubleheader with La Salle in Philadelphia.

In the first game, Don Quinn hit a two-run double in the fifth and Mike Hartman launched a solo home run in the sixth to carry La Salle to a 3-2 victory. David Fitt and Chad Foutz (Franklin County High School) drove in the runs for the Hokies, who left runners on second and third in the top of the seventh inning.

In the second game, Kevin Barker and Josh Herman (William Byrd) combined to drive in seven runs as Tech rebounded with a 9-3 victory. Herman hit a three-run homer in the first and Barker added an RBI double in the third, a two-run homer in the fifth and another RBI double in the sixth. Denny Wagner (3-3) picked up the victory for the Hokies (32-21 overall, 16-4 conference). La Salle's record is 17-28, 8-12.

VMI dropped an 8-5 decision to The Citadel to end its season at the Southern Conference baseball tournament.

The Bulldogs took the lead in the sixth inning as Bo Betchman walked and advanced to second on Garrick Haltiwanger's infield single. Both runners scored on Curt Beerman's double down the first base line giving The Citadel a 5-3 lead.

David Dixon hit a solo homer for the Keydets (17-29) in the eighth inning to pull the team within one.

Nate Shepperson led the Keydets with three hits and one RBI. The Citadel (33-25) advances to play Georgia Southern in the final.

Ferrum's Ryan Brittle (Radford) hit a two-run homer in the top of the tenth to lift the Panthers (33-9) to an 8-6 win over John Carroll in the first game of a doubleheader at the Marietta Shrine Tournament in Marietta, Ohio.

The Panthers got two hits and two RBI from Brittle, Pat Muncher and Shannon Gray. Chris Allen pitched two innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win.

In game two, Marietta blasted Ferrum 17-3. Ferrum managed only one earned run on seven hits, two by Gray.

Washington and Lee banged out 21 hits and 20 runs on its way to an ODAC sweep of Randolph-Macon.

The Generals (16-11, 11-5) took the first game 14-3 on the strength of a nine-run third inning. Graig Fantuzzi's bases-loaded single drove in three runs.

In game two, Rob Boston did not allow a hit until the sixth inning to pick up the 6-2 win. Fantuzzi picked up three hits in the nightcap to help defeat Randolph-Macon (13-12, 7-9).

Virginia golfers defeat West Virginia

Virginia golfers won eight of 10 individual matches Sunday over West Virginia to win the two-day tournament 36-24 at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.

Virginia's team wiped out a 16-14 deficit from Saturday's two-man team play at The Homestead in Hot Springs.

Virginia victories during Sunday's final were scored by Claude Williamson, Scott Inman, David Brogan, J.P. Leigh, Charlie Green, Keith Decker, Hank Klein and Jimmy Flippen Jr. Inman, Green and Decker all won by 3-0 sweeps.

Virginia holds a 9-4 edge in total victories and has a three-match winning streak.

Wilson Pasley of Roanoke won the singles title at the Virginia Independent Conference tennis championships on Saturday in Chatham. The Roanoke Valley Christian student defeated Taymour Hamdy of Fishburne Military Academy 6-0, 6-1.

Washington and Lee's women's tennis team won all nine flights to claim its sixth straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship.

The nine-flight sweep was the first in ODAC history. Winning titles for the Generals were Natalia Garcia, Ericka Shapard, Berry Blankinship, Julie Ayers, Shelly Sunderman and Mary Celeste Foster. Garcia and Ayers, Sunderman and Foster and Shapard and Blankinship teamed to win doubles titles.

The Roanoke Star U-14 White won the ninth annual Dogwood Festival Soccer Tournament in Johnson City, Tenn., with a 2-0 victory over the Johnson City Falcons in the final. Star goalie Roger Wimmer did not allow any goals in the tournament's three games. Sean Mercer scored both goals in the championship.

The Roanoke Star U-13 White, the state's third-ranked team, defeated Springfield 3-1 at Green Hill Park to advance in the State Cup. Ray Equi, Glenn Grunewald and Donnie Smith scored goals.
