PC sales catch TVs, and it may not matter

NEW YORK - Some computer industry executives keep saying American consumers are buying more personal computers than television sets. But it has not been true. Until now.

In the first three months of 1996, consumer electronics stores, PC superstores and office superstores sold 937,000 personal computers , according to Computer Intelligence Infocorp of La Jolla, Calif. About 660,000 TVs were sold during the same period, according to the Consumer Electronics Manufacturing Association.

Spending on PCs, typically $2,000 per machine, has exceeded spending on TVs, typically $400 each, in the past two years.

The distinction may become a moot point soon. Gateway 2000 Inc. earlier this month began selling a $3,800 device that is a combination of a personal computer and television set.

Lloyd's, states extend cease-fire

WASHINGTON - Lloyd's of London agreed Monday to wait another month before trying to seize assets from about 2,700 U.S. investors, some of whom face financial ruin.

Lloyd's won greater protections from state regulators for its $20 billion bank accounts, used to pay claims in this country. But negotiations continue over lawsuits that accuse Lloyd's of securities fraud. A previous ``cease-fire'' was to expire today.

So far, nine states, including Virginia, have sued Lloyd's, alleging it recruited U.S. investors to invest in the British insurance market without adequately informing them of the risks. Lloyd's denies the charges.
