Fire and ice will be culinary compliments this weekend in downtown Roanoke as the 16th annual Strawberry Festival and the 17th annual Virginia State Championship Chili Cookoff heat and cool palates.

Strawberries - shortcakes; chocolate-dipped; slushes; or sundaes, priced from $2.75 to $3.75 - will be the fund-raiser for the nonprofit Community School. The sweet treats will be available 10:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Crestar Plaza in downtown Roanoke.

About 50 chefs will fire up their pots and dish out free chili samples 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday on Salem Avenue between Williamson Road and Jefferson Street and adjoining areas, vying for a trip to October's world championship challenge in Reno, Nev., and for the local People's Choice award. Entertainment will go on all day on stage at First Union Plaza. The chili pepper eating contest will be at 1 p.m.
