Betty Hanbury of Christiansburg won a gold medal at the Senior Olympics for her skills in billiards.
The 1996 New River Valley Senior Games wrapped up April 22. One hundred and two participants from Montgomery, Giles, Floyd and Roanoke counties won 242 medals, including 137 gold, 71 silver and 34 bronze. Games included basketball, billiards, bowling, canasta, cards, croquet, discus, Frisbee, golf, horseshoes, mini golf, riflery, shot put, softball hit and throw, swimming, 50-meter run, one-quarter-mile walk and 1-mile walk.
Though the NRV Senior Games were not a qualifying event, they helped athletes prepare for the Virginia State Senior Olympics at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg from May 29 through June 1. Twenty-five New River Valley seniors plan to compete at the state level this year. The state competition is a qualifying event for the National Senior Sports Classic in Tucson, Ariz., in 1997. The Montgomery County Senior Athletes usually have from seven to 10 people qualify to participate in the national event.
"The deadline for registering for this year's competition has passed but it's never too soon to start preparing for next year," said Sherry Kostric, director of Christiansburg Senior Center. For more information about the games, call Kostric at 382-8173
