Nearly 70,000 Manitou Mach 5 suspension forks for mountain bikes are susceptible to cracks and breaks that may cause the front wheel to come off, the government said Tuesday.
The manufacturer, Answer Products of Valencia, Calif., is offering free replacements to customers who return the forks, sold from August 1995 to March 1996, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
The company has received 49 reports of cracked forks, including five riders who suffered cuts, bruises and scrapes.
The Mach 5 forks were original equipment on more than 27,000 Trek, Fisher, Diamondback, Marin, Mongoose and other high-end bicycles. More than 41,000 forks also were sold separately for $270 to $380.
Forks with serial numbers lower than 5100086500 should be replaced. Those with serial numbers between 5100086500 and 5100149464 should be inspected. Consumers may contact Answer Products at (800)670-7446.
