BROWN, J. P., 63, of 511 Lincoln Avenue, Marion, died Tuesday, April 30, 1996, in Smyth County Community Hospital. Mr. J. P. Brown was a native of Smyth County, and retired from the Marion Police Department as a desk sergeant with 15 years of service. He also served as a magistrate and justice of the peace in Marion for a number of years. He was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Konnorock. Survivors include his parents, Sherman and Rosie Brown of Chilhowie; three sons, Craig Brown and Larson Brown of Marion and James Brown of Chilhowie; two sisters, Shirley Huffman and Debbie Taylor of Chilhowie; four brothers, Arthur Brown and Buford Brown of Chilhowie, Eugene Brown of Marion and Robbie Brown of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren, Nicholas Brown, Kayla Brown and Jennifer Brown, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for J. P. Brown will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday from the Laurel Valley Community Church, Konnorock, with the Rev. Roger Kluttz officiating. Burial will follow in the Laurel Valley Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Fred Catron, Richard Henderson, Sam Mutter, Dave Woodrum, Davey Woodrum and Russell Huffman. Honorary pallbearers will be all local law enforcement agencies. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Barnett's Funeral Home, Marion.

DeWEESE, Woodrow Clynton, 79, of Bent Mountain passed away Tuesday April 30, 1996 in a local hospital. He was retired from VDOT and a member of Copper Hill Church of the Brethren. He is survived by his wife, Mary Maebelle DeWeese, Bent Mountain; daughter and son-in-law, Robert L. and Phyllis D. Joh nson, Beckley, W.Va.; four brothers, Layman H., Virgil T., Arving H., and John H. DeWeese; three sisters, Violet D. Craighead, Lois D. Rock and Josephine Barksdale; special niece, Maria Faye Nichols. Mr. DeWeese was preceded in death by his parents, Trigg Preston and Laura B. DeWeese. HARRIS, Henry C., Jr., (``Red''), 63, of Marion, died Tuesday, April 30, 1996. Funeral 1 p.m. Thursday, Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel.

HARRIS, Mabel Poole, of Peppers Ferry Road, Pulaski, died Monday, evening April, 29, 1996, in Pulaski Community Hospital. Born in P ulaski, she was the daughter of the late Blanche Carper Poole and William Edgar Poole. Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her husband, William S. Harris. She was a familiar face as an instructor at Via's School of Beauty for over 30 years. Mrs. Harris was a choir member, sunday school teacher and very active longtime member of the Pulaski First Pentecostal Holiness Church. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Roger (Karen) Frye, Pulaski. Funeral services will be held Thursday 2 p.m. from the First Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. C. R. Conner and Rev. David Wood officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. Visiting will be anytime after 1 p.m. Wednesday and the family will receive friend Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 at Thomas M. HODGE, Gale B., 56, of Elliston, died Tuesday, April 30, 1996, at her home. Born i n Canisteo, N.Y. on May 31, 1939, she was employed as a cashier at the Lancer Mart in Ironto. Surviving are her husband, Gene Hodge; one son, Donald Simonini, Key West, Fla.; one daughter and son-in-law, Shelli and Kent Martin, Roanoke; one sister and brother-in-law, Arlene and Richard Maine, New York; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Royce and Jo Ellen Evans, Indiana, Burt (twin brother) and Sharon Evans, New York; mother and father, Mona and Lawrence Ashbaugh, New York; two grandchildren, Chantel Clark and Miriah Martin, both of Roanoke; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Polly and Harry Hodge, Blacksburg; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 3, 1996, 2 p.m., at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ronald Hodge officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. JACKSON, Paul Ray, 65, of Wirtz, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 1996. Born November 9, 1930, he was a son of the late Charles Essie and Annie Lori Wheeler Jackson. He was retired from Booker T. Washington National Monument. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Lee Jackson of the home ; four daughters, Jane Jackson of Greensboro, N.C., Elanda Gobble of Abingdon, Mary Johnson of Tazewell, Sylvia Cole of Martinsville; one son, Henry D. Jackson of Roanoke. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. JOURNELL, Robert Mason, Jr., of Salem, passed away Monday, April 29, 1996 at Lewis-Gale Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was a member of West Salem Baptist Church and retired from General Electric after 28 years of service. He was preceded in death by his two sons, Robert Mason (``Sparky'') Journell, III, Salem, Howard Frazier (``Ted'') Journell, Lafayette. He is survived by his wife, Christine; daughter, Catherine E. Thompson, Salem; sister and brother-in-law, Kathryn and John Shoskin, Clearwater, Fla.; six grandchildren, Mason and Terri Hall, Dwayne J. Hall, Salem, Amelia and Miller Isley, Richmond, Christopher (``Scott'') Journell, Travis and Tammy Journell, Lafayette, Jessica Lynn Journell, Salem; three great-grandsons, Jacob Darius Journell, Salem, Jamie and Devon Journell, Lafayette; three half brothers, L. LEMON, Glenn Hampton, 87, of 2702 Richelieu Ave., S.W., died at home Monday evening, April 29, 1996. A resident of Roanoke his entire life, he was a graduate of Jefferson High School and attended Duke University, where he was a halfback on the varsity football team. He was an officer of the Valley Lumber Corporation and Warehouse Sales Co., Inc., and was a member of the Roanoke Country Club and the Roanoke German Club. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Elizabeth Armistead Trout, and is survived by his second wife, the former Natalie Roberts Foster. Other survivors include two sons, Glenn Hampton Lemon Jr. of Williamsburg and Philip Henry Lemon of Roanoke; one grandson, Gregory Boyd Lemon of Williamsburg; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Armistead Lemon and Anne Holman Lemon, both of Roanoke; four brothers, E. Marvin Lemon of Midlothian, C. K. Lemon Jr. and C. Ross Lemon, both of Roanoke, and William N. Lemon of Salem, and one sister, Ruth L. Bergeron of Waitsfield, Vt. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. this Thursday, May 2, at St. John's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Thomas P. O'Dell officiating. MIDDEKER, Dorothy Mae, 84, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, April 30, 1996. She was the widow of Robert Middeker. Surviving is a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Richard Conway, of Roanoke; a son, Dale Middeker, Farmington Hills, Michigan; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild. MITCHELL, Woodie Lee, 87, of Blacksburg, died Monday, April 29, 1996, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lala Thompson. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Myrtle T. Mitchell. Also surviving are his daughter, Frances Parsons, Blacksburg; grandchildren, Linda Parsons, Ann Parsons, Mitchell and Suzanne Parsons, Carol Parsons, Kay and Joe Reasor; great-grandchildren, Matthew Parsons and Virginia Reasor; sisters, Mattie Mogavero, Christiansburg, Alma Lester, Alum Ridge; brother-in-law, Hassell Thompson; sisters-in-law, Edith Brammer, Opal and Everett Wirt, Mary Pugh, Aleen Wade, Irene Thompson; and many nieces and nephews. He was a member of the Roanoke Valley Presbyterian Church and served 24 years as a member of ASCS (Consolidated Farm Service Agency). SEIBERT, William C., 74, of 616 Westview Avenue, Bedford, died Monday, April 29, 1996, at home after a lengthy illness. He was born in Hummelstow n, Pa. on June 28, 1921, a son of the late Franklin B. Seibert and Ruth Zimmerman Seibert Devine. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Seibert was a retired employee of the Veteran's Administration. He is survived ed by his wife, Edith W. Seibert; two sons, William C. Seibert Jr. and Douglas B. Seibert; one daughter, Martha S. Johnson; one sister, Jean Sells of Palmyra, Pa.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Seibert was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and the Amateur Radio Club of Bedford. A memorial service will be held at Main Street United Methodist Church on Thursday, May 2, 1996, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. D. Glen Langston officiating. SHAW, Robert L., Jr., 79, of Independence, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 1996 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, Elkin, N.C. He was born November 2, 1916 at Baywood, Va. to Robert L. and Dita A. Osborne Shaw. He was a retired Virginia Cooperative Extension Agent and a U. S. Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Nonnie W. Shaw, Charlottesville, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and June Shaw, Galax, Doug and Rachel Shaw, Independence; four grandchildren, Alison Shaw, Galax, Larry Douglas Shaw, Jr., Wendy Shaw, Jared Shaw, all of Independence. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday in the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Brian Miller, and the Rev. Fred E. Jennings officiating. SMITH, Jessie Read, 91, of Salem, died Monday, April 29, 1996, at Camelot Hall. She was the manager of the Antique Lamp Shop in Salem for many years. STATON, James Meredith, (""Bud""), 87, of Fincastle died Monday, April 29, 1996. He was a former member of the Botetourt Country Club and is survived by one son, William H. Staton, of Fincastle; three daughters, Joanne Orange, Reba S. Cary, both of Salem, Jane M. St. Clair, of Roanoke; one brother, Charlie Dillon, of Fincastle; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. of German immigrant parents, and was a secretary for many years. She worked for the DoD in Heidelberg, Germany, and for the U.S.D.A. on Plum Island, N.Y. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret of Deep Gap, N.C., her son, Brian of Blacksburg, Va., her daughter, Virgini a of Dennisville, N.J., her son, David of East Patchogue, N.Y., and her daughter, Lorna of Port Republic, N.J. WHEELING, Claude H., 59, of 1715 Avondale Drive, Altavista, died Tuesday morning, April 30, 1996. Born June 16, 1936, in Floyd County, he was a son of Roy E. Wheeling and Ina Alexander Wheeling. Mr. Wheeling was Superintendent of the Town of Altavista, a retired Navy veteran, during which he served in the Vietnam Conflict. He was a member of the Campbell Lodge #316 A.F. & A.M., and was a member of Leesville United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Patricia A. Wheeling of the residence; one brother, Clevo Wheeling of Stafford; three sisters, Sunny Verlander of Richmond, Ina Bowers of Clifton Forge, Jenny Stanley of Roanoke; two brothers-in-law, Bert Allen and Robert Allen; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Nichols and Sylvia Mitchell. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, 2 p.m., at Green Hill Cemetery, Altavista, by the Rev. Stan Goldsmith and the Rev. Gene McNutt. Military honors by VFW Post 4165 and DAV Chapter and Masonic Rites by Campbell Lodge #316 A.F. & A.M. will follow. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
