VDOT contracts go to branch

Branch Highways Inc. of Roanoke has won a $5.6 million contract from the Virginia Department of Transportation to widen and improve Brandon Avenue between Keagy and Edgewood roads in Roanoke in connection with the Peters Creek Road extension project. Completion is planned by spring.

Branch also has an $8.4 million contract to build a 2-mile section of the Virginia 288 loop on the west side of Richmond, which will give access from Interstate 64 to Motorola's planned semi-conductor plant.

Fazoli's Italian Restaurants said it will open a restaurant in June at 1940 W. Main St., Salem, in a building that once housed a Bojangle's fast-food restaurant. It will be the third franchise owned and operated by Lucas Management, which also has eateries in Christiansburg and Lynchburg. Fazoli's will serve Italian food, including pizza, in a fast-food format. It will have a drive-through window.

The Roanoke Civic Center and Victory Stadium have renewed their concession and food service contracts with The Swanson Corp., an Omaha, Neb.-based company with cafeteria, vending, catering and coffee operations. The civic center renewed for three years plus a two-year option; the stadium, for two years.

Westvaco Corp., which operates a bleached-paperboard mill in Covington, said it has acquired a consumer products printing and packaging plant in Brazil through its Brazilian subsidiary, Rigesa Ltda. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Westvaco already has two unbleached-packaging material mills and four corrugated-box plants in Brazil.
