Road construction

CHRISTIANSBURG - Road construction continues through Friday on Virgina 114 (Peppers Ferry Road) in Montgomery County. One lane will be closed and a pilot truck will lead traffic through the work zone.

Drivers should be aware of stopped traffic.

Picnic package

CHRISTIANSBURG - SHARE Virginia will have a special holiday picnic package for May.

Share is open to anyone who wishes to participate. Packages cost $14 in cash or food stamps and 2 hours of volunteer time in exchange for $30 worth of fresh fruits, vegetables, staple items and frozen meats. Community service may be done at the local host organization, the SHARE warehouse, or any other volunteer or church organization.

The deadline to sign up for the May package is Wednesday, May 6. The package will be distributed on May 18.

Booths available

BLACKSBURG - The Greater Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for booth space for Tour Downtown. The event is Monday, and includes arts and crafts, foods, and music.

The fee is $50 for a booth.

MS seminar

ROANOKE - The Blue Ridge Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society will host "New Perspectives: Mastering the Management of MS" on Saturday, May 18, at 9 a.m., at the Hotel Roanoke in Roanoke, Virginia. The conference fee is $50 for healthcare professionals and $30 for people with MS.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, sometimes progressive disease of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) which most often affects young adults between the ages of 15 and 50. The disease is neither contagious nor hereditary. The cause of the disease is not known.

Jurisson Run

CHRISTIANSBURG - The D. B. Jurisson Memorial Run is June 8, at 9 a.m., in downtown Christiansburg. Awards will be given in each age group and a T-shirt will be given to each participant.

Co-op to close

DUBLIN - New River Community College will close The Co-op formerly known as Garments and Garnishes. The food and clothing bank for students and the community was operated by students in the Human Services program at NRCC. A new program is being planned to be a clearinghouse for referrals in the fall.

Donations are no longer being accepted.

"We thank everyone for the support we have received through donations in the past," says Brenda Long, Human Services intern student who has worked at the facility during spring semester.

Call local social services departments for referrals to agencies that accept clothing donations.

Virtual library funding

DUBLIN - New River Community College has received funds from the Virtual Library of Virginia project (VIVA) for the purchase of equipment to support the Virginia Community College System access to the Internet and VIVA resources.

VIVA allows libraries to provide a "virtual" learning environment in which students and faculty at Virginia's public universities and colleges are able to gather information over the Internet.

All VIVA resources are brought together on the Internet using the address hhtp://www.viva.lib.va.us which is VIVA's World Wide Web site.

VIVA, the Virtual Library of Virginia, is funded by the Virginia General Assembly.

New singles group

CHRISTIANSBURG - A new group is forming for singles in the New River Valley. The group, "New River Valley Singles" is for single or divorced people ages 18 through 45.

New River Valley Singles activities will include dances, dinners, movies, plays, concerts, bowling, picnics and trips to local attractions and events. The group will provide an opportunity for singles to enlarge their circle of friends, network, and have fun.

Initially, the group will be sponsored by New River Valley Solos, a 25 year old organization for singles.

People with creative ideas and an enthusiasm for getting the group up and running are needed. If you are interested in helping the group get started, have ideas or suggestions for activities, or if you would like information about the group, call Margy Finnegan at 951-7319.
