OFFICER WOUNDED DURING RAID HELMET SAVES HIM FROM HEAD INJURY

A police investigator was in stable condition Wednesday after being shot in the shoulder and nearly shot in the head while carrying out a drug raid. Three suspects were in custody.

The helmet of Robert Douros, a vice and narcotics investigator, deflected a bullet and saved him from a head wound. He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment of a wound to his left shoulder, police spokeswoman Maravia Ebong said.

``It appears he's going to be all right,'' Ebong said. Douros is expected to be released today.

Police returned the gunfire, which occurred while search warrants were being carried out at several locations, but no one else was hit. No charges have been filed yet against the suspects, two men and a woman.

Douros' brother, Steve, also was a police officer. He was killed in the line of duty by a drunken driver in 1980, his family said.

``Soldiers have to go to war during time of war, but policemen are at war all the time,'' said Tom Douros, the wounded investigator's father.
