SALEM SPLITS WITH KINSTON

Mike Higgins' two-run double highlighted a three-run fourth inning as the Salem Avalanche defeated Kinston Indians 3-1 in the second game of a Carolina League doubleheader on Wednesday night. Kinston won the first game 4-3. (Box scores in Baseball Scoreboard.)

With Salem runners at first and second and two out, Chad Gambill doubled home Nate Holdren, who had hit into a fielder's choice, off Kinston starter Igor Oropeza to tie the score at 1. Brian Culp, who had walked, went to third on the play. Higgins followed with his double, which provided what proved to be the winning runs for the Avalanche (17-10).

Luther Hackman (3-1) got the victory, going six innings and holding the Indians to one run. Salem closer Luis Colmenares picked up his league-leading ninth save.

In the first game, Tim Jorgensen's three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning off Colmenares lifted Kinston over the Avalanche.

In the opener, Salem had taken a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh off Indians reliever Rafael Mesa. Steven Bernhardt's RBI double scored Pookie Jones, and a single by Chan Mayber brought in Bernhardt before the Indians rallied.

David Miller led off the bottom of the seventh with a double off Avalanche starter Matt Pool, and Michael Boyle followed with a single to put runners at the corners with no outs.

Colmenares (2-3) then relieved Pool and Jorgensen greeted him by smacking a 1-0 pitch over the right-field wall, giving Kinston (13-13) the victory. Colmenares blew his second save of the season.

Mesa (1-1) picked up the victory despite giving up two runs on three hits in one inning.
