CHITTUM, William Earl, 66, of Buena Vista, died Tuesday, April 30, 1996, while attending the Washington f or Jesus Rally in Washington, D.C. Born in Rockbridge County on March 19, 1930, he was the son of the late Robert Hardy and Gracie Mae Ramsey Chittum. Mr. Chittum was a World War II veteran and a retired trucker for Advanced Drainage Systems. He was a member of Lexington Pentecostal Holiness Church. He is survived by his wife, Hallie Clark Chittum, Buena Vista; two sons, Randolph Paul Chittum, Buena Vista, and Rodney L. Chittum,. Belmont, N.C.; three sisters, Vivian C. Lilley, Jacksonville, Fla., Dessie S. Slough, Buena Vista, and Shirley C. Mutispaugh, Salem; two brothers, Clifford H. Chittum, Roanoke, and Richard S. Chittum, Salem; eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Rudolph Chittum. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 1996, at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ballard Shepard officiating. Interment will follow in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lomax Funeral Home.

CLINGEMPEEL, Carl A., 71, of Roanoke passed away Tuesday, April 30, 1996 in a local hospital. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Salem and retired after 20 years of service with Stuart-McGuire. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy B. Clingempeel; sons, C.A.Clingempeel Jr., Tampa, Fla., Mitchell Clingempeel, Roanoke. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to The American Heart Association, 4504 Starke y Road, Suite 115, Roanoke, Va. 24014. CLINGENPEEL, Doris Guilliams, 65, of Boones Mill, died Wednesday, May 1, 1996, i n a Roanoke hospital. She was a daughter of the late Walter Lee and Abigail Richards Guilliams, and was a member of Fairmont Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Winford E. Clingenpeel, of the home; her children, Michael Clingenpeel, Boones Mill, Rickey A. and Janice Clingenpeel, Callaway, Teresa C. and Rodney Frith, Boones Mill; her grandchildren, Shannon Clingenpeel, Jessica Clingenpeel, Sierra Frith, Brittany Frith, Ryan Clingenpeel; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Bill Holt, Elsie and David Bowles, Elizabeth and J. FELTS, Ruby Bryant, 80, of Route 3, Galax, died Tuesday, April 30, 1996, at the Twin County Community Hospital, Galax. Surviving are daughters, Peggy Felts McCall, Galax, Judy Felts Whaley, Greenville, S.C.; sons, Jerry M. Felts, Galax, and James W. Felts, Christiansburg; eleven grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. FULLER, Dr. Landon Edward, 92, of the Stratford House in Danville, formerly of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, April 30, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center. Dr. Fuller was born November 19, 1903, in Danville, the son of the late Sallie Morrison Fuller and Dr. Louis E. Fuller. He was married to Marian Camper Fuller, who died April 17, 1996. Dr. Fuller was a graduate of Lynchburg College and received his Masters Degree from the University of Virginia. He received his Doctoral Degree at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Fuller was an English professor at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute for many years, as well as Director of Admissions for several years. He retired from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1967, after 34 years. Dr. Fuller was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and O.D.K. He also was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and a member and past president of the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. Dr. Fuller was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany. Dr. Fuller is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 3, 1996, 11 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany. Rev. Father Donald L. Wright will be conducting the services. GILL, Frank Preston, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, April 17, 1996, in Community Hospital. Born in Kansas City, Mo. June 9, 1924, he was the son of the late Hugh Lester Gill and Jessie Marie Jackson Gill. Mr. Gill served in the Navy during World War II as a Gunners Mate on USS Amsterdam, the Air Center in Guadalcanal, and over two years on a crash boat during combat in the Pacific. There he was awarded the Bronze Star and several other medals. During the Korean Conflict he served in the army artillery as a 1st Lieutenant. He retired as a Captain from the U.S. Army reserves when he went with the Federal Aviation Agency. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Dawn Fuqua McElrath Gill; a son, Edward Lee Gill and wife, Linda Fabian Gill, of Summerville, S.C.; daughter, Pamela Ann Gill Flaherty and husband, Thomas F. Flaherty, Culpeper; grandsons, Robert Preston and James Edward Gill, Tommy Flaherty; and granddaughter, Katharine Elaine Flaherty. He was preceded in death by one brother, Glenn Gill. Frank was educated at Los Angeles City College, L.A. State, Roanoke College, and the F.A.A. Academy in Oklahoma City. He will be remembered for his bravery, patriotism, generosity, wit and integrity. A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church on Sunday, May 5, 1996, at 2 p.m. with the Rev.Deborah Hunley, Rev. Dr. James Henry, and Rev. Dr. Harry Y. Gamble officiating. The closing ceremonies will be in the Culpeper National Cemetery with military honors on Friday, May 10, 1996, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Virginia Western Natural Science Center, Roanoke, or the Rescue Mission. HACKLER, Lorina Sage, 74, of Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, April 30, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Ernest Friel and Geneva Horne Sage. Mrs. Hackler was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church in Rural Retreat, the American Legion Post #229 Ladies Auxiliary, and the Club 55 Bowling League. She is survived by her husband, Ernest L. Hackler; one daughter, Ernestine ``Tina'' Sult of Rural Retreat; two sons and daughter-in-law, Roger and Florence Hackler of Danville and Ernest H. ``Buckeye'' Hackler of Rural Retreat; five sisters, Lois Robinson of Marion, Nina Blessing of Wytheville, Clara Hodge, Maude Clyburn, Lauretta Smith, all of Rural Retreat; one brother, James Porter Sage of Rural Retreat; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. HURST, Margaree Lindsey, 94, of 2890 N. 4th Street, Wytheville, died Wednesday, May 1, 1996, in the Birdmont Health Care Center. She was the widow of Jesse C. Hurst, and was a member of the Holy Advent Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by two sons, Claude Hurst and William Hurst. She is survived by four daughters, Velma Crabtree of Wytheville, Tharon Guynn of Woodbine, Md., Jennie Umberger of Wytheville, Helen Andrews of Wytheville; four sons, Crockett Hurst, Carroll Montgomery, Eugene ``Tuncy'' Hurst, Swanson Hurst, all of Wytheville; 33 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. KERR, Lloyd Drean, 58, of Lexington, died Tuesday, April 30, 1996, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville. Born in Amherst County on November 19, 1937, he was the son of the late George Edward and Ada Belle Wise Kerr. He was a retired heavy equipment operator. He is survived by his wife, Alice Plogger Kerr, Lexington; two daughters, Sandra K. Shifflett, Greene County, Donna K. Paige, Orange; three sons, Michael Kenneth Kerr, Charlottesville, George Hardin Kerr and Jesse William Kerr, both of Lexington; a sister, Ruth K. Duff, Amherst; a brother, John E. Kerr, Buena Vista; five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mildred Kitchen, Annie Tomlin and Evelyn Wise; and two brothers, R. C. Kerr and Claude Kerr. MITCHELL, Woodie Lee, 87, of Blacksburg, died Monday, April 29, 1996, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lala Thompson. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Myrtle T. Mitchell. MONTGOMERY, James W., (``Red''), 75, of St. Pete Beach, Fla., died Monday, April 29, 1996, at the VA Medical Center at Bay Pines. He was born in Rockbridge County, and lived in Roanoke until graduating from Jefferson High School and joining the Army Air Corps in 1939. ``Red'' was known for his ready grin and (along with his inseparable companion James C. ``Jimmy'' Moynihan) as a standout back for the Jefferson High Magicians. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Air Force in 1969. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Dora ``Dannie'' M.; a son, James C. of Hopkinton, Mass.; a daughter, Margo C. Elvin of Apple Valley, Minn.; and six grandchildren. Burial will be Monday, May 6, at Bay Pines VA Cemetery, Bay Pines, Fla. The family requests that flowers be omitted. WHITTAKER, Dora Lafon, 82, of Pearisburg, died Wednesday, May 1, 1996, in Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg. Mrs. Whittaker was born in Ripplemead on February 20, 1914, and was a daughter of the late Clarence Terry and Mary Garten Lafon. Mrs. Whittaker also was preceded in death by a son, Donald (``Sonny"") Whittaker; a daughter, Phyliss Lester; a sister, Elsie Cole, and three brothers, Robert, Huston and Fred Lafon. Mrs. Whittaker was a member of Pearisburg Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Leggetts. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Paul (``Douglas"") and Panzie Whittaker of Pearisburg; a brother, Preston Lafon of Pearisburg; a sister, Eunice Lafon of Pearisburg; nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. WOOD, Flora Boothe, 84, of Troutville, died Wednesday, May 1, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey R. Wood Sr.; three daughters, Dorothy Wood Wilkerson, Gwendolyn Faye McCray and Sandra Kaye Stacey. She is survived by four daughters, Christine Watson, Midlothian, Joyce Bishop, Troutville, Nancy Avery, Roanoke, Cathy Sligh, Troutv ille; four sons, Matthew Wood, Troutville, Henry Wood, Roanoke, Dewey Wood Jr. and Ronald Wood both of Troutville; two sisters, Elsie Trent, Roanoke, Winona Henry, Bealeton; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 3, 1996 at the Rader Troutville Chapel with the Rev. Constance Wilkerson officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home
