IN SCHOOL

ROANOKE CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS announced the following winners from the District 7, Vocational Industrial Clubs of America Skills Olympics and Leadership contest held at local area schools. The first-place winners and selected second-place winners will attend the state VICA conference in Virginia Beach.

First-place winners are:

William Fleming - David Hunter, aviation science technology; Selena Shannon, commercial baking; Allen Anderson, food preparation assistant; Amy M. Bratton, law enforcement; Julia Crumley, nurse assistant; Quentin Haskins, sheet metal; Daniel Williams, fire cadet.

Patrick Henry - Brian Fagg, auto body; Joanne Thomas, cosmetology; Buzz Easterling, graphic arts

Team winners - David Andrews, Eric Beverly and Patrick Devall, Chapter Display, Patrick Henry; Christine Owsley, Erica Robertson, Kellie Tidrow and Becky Zook, Health Occupational Bowl, Patrick Henry; Amy Keene, Laura Paige, Aaron Galbreath, Drew Guelzow, VICA Quiz Bowl, Patrick Henry.

Second-place winners are:

Fleming - Seth Brillhart, aviation science technology; Christopher Hamm, commercial baking; Samuel James, food preparation assistant; Michelle Wyatt, nurse assisting; Mark Spiers, metals/welding and sheet metal.

Patrick Henry - Jenny Owens, commercial photography; Caryn Newcomb, job skill demonstration.

ROANOKE CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS announced the winners of the Regional Future Business Leaders of America competition held at Radford University.

The first-place winners are:

Daniel Daum, Mr. Future Business Leader, Patrick Henry; Taharee Webb, Ms. Future Business Leader, Patrick Henry; Brandi Dooley, information processing concepts, Patrick Henry; Amy Jewell, career manual II, Patrick Henry; Jeremy Barnes, computer applications, William Fleming; and Patrick Henry High, outstanding chapter.

ARNOLD R. BURTON TECHNOLOGY CENTER recently announced the names of its students who won first place in the VICA District VII Skill Contest recently held in Blacksburg. They are: Denny Akers, bricklayer; Eric Bell, motorcycle service technology; Andrew Donahue, air-cooled gas engines; Jennifer Fowler, poster; Jonathan Holland, occupational display; Jessica Lopez, essay; Billy McIlwraith, principles of technology; James Nutter, job interview; Judd Poulter, house construction; Shawn Preston, prepared speech; Derrick Tunstall, masonry; William Woodruff, extemporaneous speaking; Greg Peters, precision machining.

These winners will go to the state contest in May.

NATIONAL LEAGUE OF JUNIOR COTILLIONS, Roanoke Valley Chapter, recently announced those who have been named "Best Mannered Teacher" of the 1995-96 school year.

Recipients of the award are: Perry Manning of Andrew Lewis Middle School, Connie Mitchell of Botetourt Intermediate School, Karen Campbell and Danielle Wise of Cave Spring Junior High School, Lucia Craighead of East Salem Elementary, Charlotte Strickler of Grandin Court Elementary, Lynda Mauney of Glenver Junior High, Mary Jane Saunders of Herman L. Horn Elementary, Anne Larimer of Oak Grove Elementary School, Karen Martin of Penn Forest Elementary, Mary Jane Callahan, of Roanoke Catholic School, Janice Shelton of Roanoke Valley Christian School, Myra Crew of South Salem Elementary, and Lesli Adams of Woodrow Wilson Middle School. Award winners were nominated by Junior Cotillion student essays. The criteria for the selection included respect for students and acting as a good role model.

MARI CROAN, a senior at Salem High School, and BRAD REA, a senior at Glenvar High School, will each receive $1,000 Sam Walton Scholarships from Wal-Mart.

Croan and Rea were chosen because of their strong academic performance, involvement in school activities and work experiences.

Croan will attend James Madison University and Rea will attend the University of Virginia.

KIMBERLY CROWDER of Buchanan was selected to attend the Washington Journalism Conference in Washington, D.C., in April. Kimberly, a junior at James River Senior High School was one of 350 outstanding high school journalists chosen to attend the conference sponsored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council.

During the conference, the students will participate in seminars and workshops led by leaders in the fields of print, radio and television journalism.
