VWCC sets registration for summer session

Virginia Western Community College summer registration is in progress for students currently enrolled and for new and returning students.

The admissions office is open from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.

Classes begin May 16 and June 20.

Roanoke City Library in need of readers

The Roanoke City Library is recruiting readers for its taped Dial-A-Story programs.

Participants may select readings from children's books available throughout the library system. Stories must be read in three minutes or less without affecting the story line and language of the book.

City plans summer tennis programs

The Roanoke Department of Parks and Recreation will offer beginner and intermediate tennis lessons for children and adults this summer.

Children ages 6-18 may also register to participate in the United States Tennis Association Team Tennis League. Intermediate and advanced children may also participate in the Davis-Wightman Cup.

Four tournaments will be offered this summer, starting with the Star City Open June 21-23.

County school census is under way

Roanoke County schools are conducting the triennial school census. If you have not responded to the census, you are urged to send the requested information to the census office.

The census will be used to determine the distribution of sale taxes and other funds to localities.

Theater for youth sets summer tryouts

The Southwest Virginia Theater for Youth will hold open tryouts for the 1996 summer season at 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday at Calvary United Methodist Church in Salem.

Actors, singers and musicians ages 10-18 are needed. No acting experience is required. Those interested should call Jeff Chaney at 389-8710 for more information.

Roanoke Valley SPCA to hold Adoptathon

The Roanoke Valley SPCA, in conjunction with 500 animal shelters nationwide, will hold an Adoptathon Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Elmwood Park.

The group's goal for the event is to have 96 animals adopted in one day.

Citizenship classes to be offered in May

Citizenship classes will be offered by Refugee and Immigration Services on successive Saturdays from May 11 through June 1 at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke. The classes are designed to help prepare applicants for the citizenship test scheduled June 8.

VWCC sponsors 5,000-meter run

Virginia Western Community College will hold its 15th annual 5,000-meter run Saturday at 9 a.m. Race day registration is from 7:15 to 8 a.m.

SCORE offers help for small businesses

The Service Corps of Retired Executives in conjunction with The Blue Ridge Small Business Development Center will offer two small-business workshops in May.

A Prospective Business Owner's Workshop covering topics such as business regulations, taxes, insurance, organization and planning, marketing and promotion, and management skills will be held May 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Roanoke Valley Graduate Center, 117 Church Ave. The fee is $25.

A Creating an Effective Business Plan Workshop detailing the writing of business plans and financial proposals will be held on three evenings beginning Monday from 6:30 to 9:15 p.m. in the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce office, 212 S. Jefferson St. The fee is $50.

Both workshops have limited enrollment, so early registration is recommended. Call the Blue Ridge Small Business Development Center at 983-0717.

Mail carriers collect to restock food bank

The National Association of Letter Carriers will conduct a food drive May 11 to restock food pantries in local communities.

Postal patrons are asked to leave nonperishable food items in or near their mailboxes on that day. Items such as canned goods, dry cereal, dry milk and pasta are needed.

Heights Club holds captain's choice

The Heights Club will hold a captain's choice golf tournament to benefit youth athletics May 19 at 1 p.m. at Countryside Golf Course.

The entry fee is $240 per team, which includes fees, dinner buffet and beverages.

Camp Roanoke to hold fund-raising events

Camp Roanoke has announced three major benefit events for 1996.

A slow-pitch softball tournament will be held at the Burton Park athletic complex May 18-19. Teams in men's class C, D and E and women's open class are eligible. The entry fee is $120 per team. The deadline for entry is May 15. Call 562-1856 or 561-8019 for information.

A captain's choice benefit golf tournament open to men and women of all handicaps with team handicap not less than 30 will be held May 18 at Countryside Golf Course. The entry fee is $200 per team. Call 561-8019 for more information.

The final event will be an old-fashioned hoedown and auction June 20 from 4:30-9:30 p.m. at the Brambleton Center. Live music and barbecued chicken will highlight the event. A fee of $19 must be paid by June 7. Call 772-7505 to register.

Community band performs Friday

The Roanoke Valley Community Band will hold its third spring concert Friday at Cave Spring High School.

The free public concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The band is made up of about 45 mostly wind-instrument players of all ages.

Myron White, a spokesman for the group, said the band was formed primarily to give high school and college players an outlet for their music after graduation.

The band gives several concerts during the year and special presentations at community meetings.

It will play at Roanoke's Festival in the Park on May 25 at 2 p.m., performing several numbers with the Virginia Highland Bagpipe Band, White said.

Museum offers summer camps

The Virginia Museum of Transportation will offer children's summer camps beginning in June.

A six-week camp for children ages 4 to 5 based on the children's series, "Thomas the Tank Engine," will focus on transportation, math, science and art. Camp hours are from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning June 5 and ending July 10. The fee is $40 per child for the six sessions or $7 per session.

For children ages 6 to 10 the museum is offering a series of weeklong camps which will run from 9 a.m. until noon. Participants will learn about the journey of the pioneers, different forms of transportation in Roanoke, the physics of motion and building vehicles and spacecraft and aircraft. The fee for each camp is $60 a week.

Children's choir holds auditions

The Roanoke College Preparatory Division Children's Choir will hold auditions Wednesday and May 9 and 10 in 240 Olin Hall from 4 to 7 p.m. Children ages 8 to14 are eligible to try out.

Those auditioning will be asked to sing "My Country 'Tis of Thee" and a song of their choice.

Jaycees hold basketball tourney

The Roanoke Jaycees will hold a 3-on-3 basketball tournament May 18 to benefit Camp Virginia Jaycee.

The entry fee is $60 per team for the games, which will be played at the William Ruffner and William Fleming gyms.

Arts Council offers activity grants

The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge is offering scholarships to students in the Roanoke region who would not be able to participate in visual, performing or literary arts activities without financial help.

$1000 in grants will be awarded to students in grades nine through 12, based on interest, dedication and need. Applications, which must be postmarked by June 1, may be obtained at area high schools or by calling 342-5790.
