AREA WOMEN SELECTED TO ODAC TEAM

Four players from area schools were selected to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's lacrosse first team by a vote of league coaches.

Roanoke College's Lisa Franzino and Amy Waldman and Washington and Lee's Cinnie Logan and Brooke Glenn all made first team All-ODAC.

The league's player of the year was Randolph-Macon attacker Alison Smith. The senior scored 52 goals and had 23 assists and will finish her career second on the all-time NCAA Division III scoring list.

Lynchburg's Enza Steele was voted coach of the year.

Second-team selections included: Caroline McGehee of Hollins, Ali Ogelsby, Gayle Avery and Kirsten Wagner of Roanoke and Erika Snyder, Cheryl Taurassi and Whitney Parker of W&L.

In other sports news in the region:

* Two-time defending champion Bridgewater and surprising Washington and Lee will be the top two seeds when the 20th ODAC baseball tournament begins today at City Stadium in Lynchburg. W&L (16-11 overall, 11-5 conference) is making its first tournament appearance since 1991.

No.1 Bridgewater meets No.4 Lynchburg College at 4 p.m. today, and No.2 W&L faces No.3 Virginia Wesleyan at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday's games are scheduled for 4:30 and 8 p.m. and Sunday's championship matchup is 1 p.m.

* VMI has signed three student-athletes to wrestling scholarships for the 1996-97 school year: Douglas Massie of Mechanicsville, a 125-pounder from Fork Union Military Academy; Matthew Black of Yorktown, a 171-pounder from Tabb High School; and Gil Decher of Newport News, a 152-pound graduate of Peninsula Catholic High School.

* Senior shortstop Melissa Sanderson was Virginia Tech's lone selection on the All-Atlantic 10 Conference softball team.

Sanderson hit .360 and knocked in 34 runs for the Hokies, who finished 16-32 overall and 6-10 in the A-10 in their inaugural season of varsity competition.

* Amy Henry and Jackie Orsinger of Moonbeam Academy of Gymnastics in Salem earned silver team honors in the all-around category for the 13- and 14-year-old age group at the Prep Optional State Meet. Henry scored 32.8 points in the all-around and placed seventh in the balance beam with an 8.5. Orsinger scored 32.5 points.

Katie Hunt and Amber Lee qualified for the Level 5 state meet at the 8- to 10-year-old level during competition at Gymnastics Inc. in Hampton.

The cheerleading squad from Moonbeam earned superior ratings in cheer/chant dance and all-around competition at the Central Virginia Cheerleading championships in Buena Vista.

AUTO RACING FCS on track for big field

The largest Late Model Stock field in track history is expected Saturday night for the Nelson Ford 300 at Franklin County Speedway.

Dudley Lawhorn will be seeking his third Late Model victory of the season when the field of 24 to 26 cars takes the green flag in Callaway. Ferrum's Todd Philpott, the season points leader, will be looking to add to his total.

The Limited Sportsman, Pure Stock, Mini Stock and Rookie divisions also will be in action, with the Classic Modifieds making their debut.

Pre-race activities, including wrestling begin at 6:30 p.m., and the first green flag falls at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students, with fans 10 and younger admitted free.
