AVALANCHE TUMBLES ON ROAD SALEM FALLS 8-4 IN KINSTON

Perhaps it was only fitting for Salem that the promotion Thursday was called Getaway Night.

This one got away from the Avalanche - early and often.

Kinston got four RBI from Sean Casey, and starting pitcher Ted Warrecker held Salem to one hit in seven innings as the Indians built an eight-run lead and went on to defeat Salem 8-4 in a Carolina League baseball game, earning a split of the four-game series.

Kinston (14-13), which is 2-6 vs. the Avalanche this season, took control of the game in the bottom of the second inning.

Chan Perry singled to lead off the inning against Salem's John Burke, making his last start with the Avalanche before going to Class AAA Colorado Springs. Casey followed with a single, and Michael Moyle walked on four pitches to load the bases with no outs.

Burke was able to strike out Tim Jorgensen for the first out, but he bobbled Bryan Warner's ensuing grounder and threw wildly past first baseman John Fantauzzi into right field for an error. Perry, Casey and Moyle scored and Warner went to third as Kinston took a 3-0 lead.

After walking Jamie Taylor to put runners at the corners, Burke struck out Guillermo Mercedes, but the third strike got past catcher Mike Higgins, allowing Warner to score for a four-run lead.

The Indians added a run in the bottom of the third. David Miller led off with a single and stole second. One out later, Miller scored on a double by Casey to give Kinston a 5-0 lead.

The Indians put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth inning against Salem reliever Scott LaRock. Miller reached on an error by Pookie Jones and Perry singled before Casey cranked a three-run homer with one out to give the Indians an 8-0 lead. Casey finished 3-for-4 with a single, double, homer and four RBI.

Salem (17-11) scored its only runs in the eighth inning off Kinston reliever Daniel Brabant. Elvis Pena led off the inning with a walk, and one out later, Chan Mayber singled to put runners at first and second. Chad Gambill followed with a towering three-run homer that made it 8-3.

The Avalanche closed to 8-4 when Higgins led off the ninth inning with a solo homer to left field, but Salem could get no closer.

Warrecker (2-1) got the victory, going seven innings and giving up the one hit - a single by Mayber. He walked five and struck out four. Burke (0-1) took the loss, giving up five runs - two earned - on four hits while walking three and striking out five in four innings.
