TODAY'S THE DAY TO ADOPT PET

The Roanoke Valley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has set a goal of adopting 96 animals in one day at its "Pet Adoptathon '96," an all-day event from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. today in Elmwood Park.

The event is one of 500 animal adoption events today at animal shelters across the United States and Canada.

The Roanoke Valley SPCA "is pleased to join this first-ever effort to bring together homeless dogs, cats, puppies and kittens with good adoptive families," said the Rev. Denise Huffman, event chairwoman.

The animals available for adoption have been quarantined and groomed at area veterinarians' offices to ensure that they are in good health.

Adoption fee is $50. The fee ensures that animals receive their first shots and includes a certificate for a discounted spaying or neutering at area veterinarians' offices.

Highlights include:

* Therapeutic horse-riding demonstrations, 10 a.m. to noon.

* A "Pet Contest," 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The public is invited to enter pets.

* "Blessing of the Animals," 12:55 p.m.

* "Pet Walk '96," one of the SPCA's annual fund-raisers, at 1 p.m. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. All entrants must show evidence of rabies vaccination.
