Baseball

BEN BROWN, Giles

Brown pitched a five-inning no-hitter as the Spartans beat Auburn 13-0. Brown struck out seven, walked four and faced only 17 hitters, two over the minimum. It was only the second no-hitter in 12 years of coaching for Giles' Bruce Frazier, who numbers among his alumni, Mike Williams of the Philadelphia Phillies.

DOUG KENNEY, GREG WELLS, Cave Spring

Kenney had five hits in seven trips as Cave Spring whipped Heritage 14-8 and Patrick Henry 12-4. Kenney knocked in six runs, doubled and smacked two homers. Wells added support with six hits in eight trips including a double and four RBI.

GREG HARRISON, R.J. BECKWITH, Salem

Harrison knocked in six runs with a triple and bases-loaded homer while Beckwith pitched a four-hitter and knocked in four runs in the Spartans' 19-2 Blue Ridge District victory over Alleghany.

BRANDON PAINTER, Liberty

Painter pitched and won two games, allowing only one earned run and striking out 22 in 14 innings as the Minutemen rolled past Buckingham County 7-5 and Altavista 8-1. He also had four hits in seven at bats.

BRIAN JONES, William Byrd

In two victories, 14-1 over Alleghany and 12-2 over Northside, Jones was 6-for-8 with two homers and nine RBI. SOFTBALL

CARRIE DOUPNIK, William Byrd

Doupnik went 6-for-8 with four doubles, four RBI and four runs scored as the Terriers beat Northside 7-1 and Heritage 15-0.

TRACY CUMMINGS, JOY GAUTHIER, Alleghany

In two victories over Lord Botetourt and Salem, Cummings was 7-for-13 including a two-RBI hit that beat the Cavaliers in the seventh. Gauthier was the winning pitcher in both games to push her record to 8-1.

LISA BAETZ, North Cross

Baetz was a combined 8-for-9 with two doubles, a triple, two homers and eight RBI in an 18-8 victory over Roanoke Valley Christian and a 19-12 triumph over Roanoke Catholic. Against Catholic, Baetz hit for the cycle and had four RBI.

BARBARA DOYLE, Roanoke Catholic

Doyle was 5-for-8 with a homer and five RBI in two games that saw the Celtics beat Carlisle 12-4 before losing 19-12 to North Cross.

KASEY BOWLES, Christiansburg

In three Blue Demon victories, Bowles won two and saved another game as she struck out 13 in 13 innings. TENNIS

JUSTIN YOUNG, DREW ANDERSON, Northside

Both won their singles matches and then teamed to win in doubles as Northside wiped out perennial Blue Ridge District power Salem 8-1 and blanked Northside 9-0. The singles sweep against Salem was a first for the Vikings.

BEN NESTER, TIM FLEISHER, Radford

Both swept four matches each in the Radford Invitational that included Group AA Brookville and Abingdon along with Floyd County. Nester also teamed with Ravi Tayal to beat Giles in doubles 0-6, 6-4, 7-5 for a 5-4 team victory as the Bobcats won their second Three Rivers District title. Fleisher is 14-0 playing No. 4 singles for Radford while Nester, at No. 1, is 11-3. TRACK

KEVIN SLUSSER, MEGAN NOBLE, Giles

Slusser scored 24 1/2 points including a first place in the 110-meter hurdles and the long jump to lead the Spartans to the boys' title in the All-American Relays at Radford. Noble helped Giles win its second consecutive All-American title with firsts in the 100-meter hurdles and the triple jump as she scored 30 points.

TRISH NERVO, Glenvar

In what might be her final big meet in the Roanoke Valley, Nervo won and set Cosmopolitan Club Invitational meet records in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races despite having no competition to push her. In fact, she lapped all but one runner in the 3,200-meter run in which she ran an 11:05.

RAHEEM BARNWELL, LOUIS BOOKER, Patrick Henry

Together, these two scored 70 points of 121 for the Patriots as they won the Cosmopolitan Club Invitational meet. Barnwell (both hurdles) and Booker (200- and 400-meter dashes) both won two individual firsts and ran on PH's winning 400-meter relay team. SOCCER

WHITNEY CAMPBELL, KRISTA ENGL, Roanoke Catholic

In a 4-0 victory over Roanoke Valley Christian, Campbell had five saves in the first half and scored a goal as a field player in the second half. Engl preserved the shutout with eight saves in the second half.

MICHAEL BERRY, CHRIS DOWDY, Wm. Byrd

Berry in a 10-3 victory over Northside and a 7-0 triumph over Rockbridge County, had seven assists and three goals. Dowdy scored four goals in the same games.

LEE FISHER, Liberty

Fisher scored both goals in a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Brookville. He has scored the hat trick in three of the Minutemen's six games.

MARY JENNINGS, North Cross

Jennings scored two goals as the Raiders beat rival Roanoke Valley Christian in a Blue Ridge Conference tussle.

TEAM PERFORMANCES

William Byrd's girls' soccer team, playing in its first official season, started the week 1-7, but swept victories from Salem, Blacksburg and Northside. Roanoke Catholic's boys' team won four games, outscoring four other schools 20-2.
