Pets in the Park

Help save 96 lives and add a furry new member to your family.

The Roanoke Valley SPCA will have 96 cats, kittens, puppies and dogs available for adoption today in Roanoke's Elmwood Park from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Counselors will be available to help screen potential ``parents.'' A $50 fee is required, which includes $20 toward mandatory spaying or neutering of the pet at a veterinarian of your choice (most vets give an additional 25 percent off), the first set of shots, deworming and a free health check up.

The event is part of a national Adoptathon '96, with 500 shelters participating throughout the country, and is sponsored by Iams Pet Food Co., the North Shore Animal League and the Roanoke Valley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The Star City Obedience Club will give demonstrations from 9:30-11 a.m.; the Therapeutic Horse Riding demonstration will be held from 10 a.m.-noon and a pet contest with prizes will take place from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

The annual Walk for the Animals will start at 1 p.m. with registration open until the time of the walk. A proof of rabies vaccination is required

The SPCA shelter is closed for adoption today, but is open for pound releases.
