ROBERT B. HOFFMAN has been appointed president of Framatome Cogema Fuels (formerly B&W Fuel Co.), an affiliate of Lynchburg-based Framatome Technologies. The company supplies fuel for the U.S. commercial nuclear power industry.
Hoffman worked for 22 years in the nuclear division of General Electric Co. in San Jose, Calif., where he held positions including manufacturing development manager, project manager and manager of international fuel sales. In 1989, he was appointed vice president of sales and marketing for ABB, ASEA-Brown Boveri, where he was responsible for marketing fuel, components and services to U.S. and Pacific Rim utilities.
BANKING
J. RICHARD CARLING, vice chairman and head of portfolio management for First Union National Bank of Virginia, has been elected to the board of directors of the Society of the Alumni at the College of William and Mary, the sixth-oldest alumni association in the United States. In 1994, the society was named the top alumni association in the country by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
LISA SHAWVER has been promoted to operations officer-automation at First Union Corp.'s operations servicenter in Roanoke. She joined Dominion Bankshares Corp., First Union's predecessor, in 1989.
COMPUTERS
C. CARTER BULLINGTON has joined Entre Computer Center in Roanoke as a systems consultant. Bullington previously was a vice president with Peakwood Capital Corp., and, before that, an analyst with Dominion Bankshares Corp.
FIBER OPTICS
Optical Cable Corp. in Roanoke has expanded its board of directors appointing as new directors JOHN M. HOLLAND, president and co-founder of Cybermotion Inc., a robotic systems manufacturer in Salem; and RANDALL H. FRAZIER, president and founder of Salem-based R. Frazier Inc., an international recycling company which re-engineers surplus and obsolete computer parts and electronic equipment.
HEALTH CARE AND FITNESS
The Roanoke Athletic Club, an affiliate of Carilion Health System, has added several people to its management team: JOHN WARE has joined the club as manager of wellness services, SHELLI BLANKENSHIP is staff supervisor and DIANE RHODES is in the sales department.
HOSPITALITY
MARTIN F. DUANE has been named assistant food and beverage director at The Homestead resort hotel in Hot Springs. Prior to coming to the Bath County resort, Duane was assistant food and beverage director and executive director of banquet services at the Fairmont Hotel and was co-owner and manager of the Allegro Bistro, both in New Orleans.
MEDIA
CATHERINE C. GREENBERG, marketing director of The Roanoke Times, has been named to the additional position of director of strategic development for the Landmark Publishing Group based in Norfolk. In addition to the Roanoke newspaper, Landmark owns the News & Record in Greensboro, N.C., The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk and Landmark Community Newspapers, based in Shelbyville, Ky.
JOSHUA NAIR has been appointed an account executive at WJPR/WFXR Fox 21/Fox 27 television station in Roanoke. He comes to the station from WLFL Fox 22/WRDC UPN 28 in Raleigh, N.C. Nair has sales experience in radio and local and national television.
MORTGAGE LENDING
JIM GEORGE has been promoted to senior mortgage loan officer at Salem Financial. George has more than 10 years of real estate and lending experience and specializes in purchase and Federal National Mortgage Association assistance.
LEN WINGER and JUDY ELLINGTON have joined National City Mortgage Co.'s Roanoke office as mortgage loan officers. Winger comes to the mortgage company after 10 years as a real estate agent in the Roanoke Valley. Ellington has 20 years' experience in real estate, including sales and real estate law.
REAL ESTATE
JOSEPH S. DURRER JR., president of Durrer Appraisal and Consulting Services Inc. in Roanoke County, has been appointed by Gov. George Allen to a four-year term as an appraiser/member of the Virginia Real Estate Appraiser Board.

JOYCE BRADFORD has been appointed manager of the Roanoke office of AAA of Virginia. She succeeds JEFF HUMMEL, who recently moved to the Richmond-Midtown office.
