ROADWATCH

Here are highway and street projects scheduled this week by the Virginia Department of Transportation and area localities. Schedules are subject to change because of weather and contractors' scheduling. # indicates new information.

BEDFORD COUNTY

Virginia 707: Construction is under way to widen and pave Virginia 707 between Virginia 24 and Virginia 43.

#Virginia 805: At Stone Mountain, the bridge over the Norfolk Southern tracks is under construction. Motorists are advised to take Virginia 743 south, turn left on Virginia 654 and then right on Virginia 805.

#Virginia 122: At the intersection of Virginia 801 and Virginia 122, the bridge deck is being replaced. Truck traffic is restricted to 8 feet wide. Traffic signals are being installed to control traffic during construction.

Virginia 661 (Camp Ruthers Road): The bridge will be replaced over the Norfolk Southern tracks, between Virginia 811 and Virginia 211. Motorists will need to find alternate routes.

Virginia 671 (Timberidge Road): Bridge over the Norfolk Southern tracks near Forest will be replaced. The road will be under construction, and surface treatment will be applied between U.S. 460 and U.S. 221.

Virginia 645: Near the Lynchburg city limits, the bridge over Judith Creek will be repaired starting Monday. Work will last about two weeks. Motorists should expect lengthy delays or use alternate routes.

BOTETOURT COUNTY

#Interstate 81: Repair and asphalt overlay of the concrete pavement. Lane closures will be in northbound lanes. There will not be any lane closures May 10-11 due to graduation at Virginia Tech. The speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph.

Virginia 654 (Read Mountain Road): Work is under way to widen the bridge at U.S. 11. No left turns will be permitted from southbound U.S. 11 onto Virginia 654. Motorists should use caution traveling in this area. Work should be completed in the fall.

CARROLL COUNTY

Virginia 707: Starting Monday, the bridge near Hebron will be closed to through traffic for repairs. The bridge is located over Crooked Creek between Virginia 635 and Virginia 620. Motorists who are traveling on Virginia 707 may take Virginia 635 west or Virginia 620 east as detours.

FRANKLIN COUNTY

Virginia 632: The road is under construction to Virginia 717. Surface treatment will be applied.

Virginia 832: The road is under construction between Virginia 40 and Virginia 707. Surface treatment will be applied.

Virginia 742: The road is under construction from Virginia 643 north to Virginia 739.

Virginia 691: The road is under construction from U.S. 220 to Virginia 919, and surface treatment will be applied.

GILES COUNTY

#Memorial Boulevard and College Street: Work is under way to replace box culverts on both streets. The roads will remain closed for approximately 90 days. Motorists should take alternate routes around the work sites.

HENRY COUNTY

U.S. 58: The 4.6-mile stretch from Virginia 684 to Spencer is being widened to four lanes. Traffic has been shifted to the new lanes while a bridge is rebuilt. Speed limit is 45 mph. Estimated completion is July.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY

Virginia 177: Work is under way to add southbound lanes from I-81 to Radford.

Virginia 685: Work is under way to widen and straighten Prices Fork Road near Blacksburg.

Depot Street: Work is under way to extend Depot Street from U.S. 460 (North Franklin Street) to Virginia 8 (North Main Street) in Christiansburg. One lane in each direction will be open. Flaggers will direct traffic; there may be delays.

#U.S. 11 (Green Hill): Work is under way near the Roanoke County/Montgomery County line to relocate the eastbound lanes and construct a new bridge over the Norfolk Southern tracks. Motorists should use extreme caution in the work zone.

PULASKI

Work has begun to install concrete median barriers. During construction, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

ROANOKE and ROANOKE COUNTY

Peters Creek Road extension: The section from Melrose Avenue to Shenandoah Avenue is under construction. Intersections at Melrose, Salem Turnpike and Shenandoah will be reworked. Work is being done along Salem and Shenandoah. Drivers should use caution. The intersection of Peters Creek and Melrose may have lane closure for pipe work. There will be delays.

Second Street (Gainsboro Road): Work is under way to widen Second Street from Salem Avenue north to Orange Avenue. A bridge will be built over the Norfolk Southern tracks near the existing grade crossing, which is closed. Salem is closed from the middle of the block between First and Second streets to Third Street. Norfolk Avenue is closed to through traffic crossing Second. Motorists may experience delays. Gilmer Avenue will be restricted to local traffic between Second and Patton Avenue. During working hours, Gilmer and Patton will be restricted to one lane, with flaggers controlling traffic. Patton will be restricted to local traffic only, between Gainsboro and Second Street. Harrison Avenue will be closed from Gainsboro to one block west. It will remain closed for about three months. Completion is expected in fall 1997.

Interstate 81: Bridges over Mason's Creek between exits 140 (Virginia 311) and 141 (Virginia 419) are being replaced. Two lanes of traffic are being maintained in each direction through the work zone. The southbound on-ramp at Exit 141 (Virginia 419) is closed. Motorists can use Virginia 311 to Exit 140 to travel south. Speed has been reduced to 55 mph. Estimated completion in spring 1997.

Cresthill Drive: Cresthill Drive is closed starting at Mudlick Creek between Hillbrook Circle (Virginia 1649) and Kirkwood Drive (Virginia 1664) for road improvements and construction of a new bridge. Work should be completed in the fall.
