ARNOLD, Katherine E ., 69, of Route 1, Max Meadows, died Friday, May 3, 1996, in the Malin Health Care Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl W. Arnold. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Iretta and Wayne Umberger of Max Meadows; four sons and daughters-in-law, Joel and Judy Arnold, Tracy and Vicki Arnold, and Paul and Trina Arnold of Max Meadows and Jamie and Melody Arnold of Rural Retreat; one brother, Edward Akers of Galax; three half sisters, Mary Jones of Barren Springs, Susan Browne of Baltimore, Md., and Marie Falero of Farmville; three half brothers, Robert Akers and Paul Akers of Monticello, N.Y., and Gary Akers of Germany; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 6, 1996, at St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. David Wood and the Rev. Ray Humphries officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the time of service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday, and other times at the home of Iretta Umberger. CRUMPACKER, Tony Allen, 50, of Roanoke, died Saturday, May 4, 1996. He was employed for 30 years at NationsBank, and is survived by his wife, Charlotte S. Crumpacker; his mother, Frances Crumpacker; one daughter, Stacie Crumpacker; one son, Mathew Crumpacker; his maternal grandmother, Mary Harris; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Hershel and Joyce Siz emore; one sister, Donna Johnson; one brother, Sam Crumpacker Jr.; one stepson, Dustin Davis, and one stepdaughter, Sara Davis, all of Roanoke; one niece, Debbie Mitchell, and two nephews, Jan Michael Cox and Sam Crumpacker III. HURT, Mary Jane Patton, 83, of Route 1, Rural Retreat (the Cedar Springs community), died Saturday, May 4, 1996, in the Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands. She was born in Grayson County, the daughter of the late William Isaak and Mattie Sue Funk Patton. Mrs. Hurt was a member of the Sharon Baptist Church in Rural Retreat, and was preceded in death by her husband, James Garland Hurt. Surviving are three daughters and a son-in-law, Jean A. Parks and Emma K. Horne of Richlands and Evelyn H. and Grant A. Ring of Rural Retreat; a son, James W. (``Buddy"") Hurt of Rural Retreat; a sister, Virginia Slagle of Rural Retreat; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 6, 1996, at Sharon Baptist Church, with the Rev. Michael Hoyle and the Rev. Ralph Horton officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. JOHNSON, James MacArthur, (``Dar""), 52, of Rocky Mount, died Friday, May 3, 1996 in Franklin Memorial Hospital. He was born November 14, 1943, the son of the late James Houston Johnson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of American Legion Post #111. Mr. Johnson also was a member of Mt. Ivy Christian Church. He was employed for over 27 years with Lynch Funeral Home, Rocky Mount. JOHNSON, Joseph Thomas, (``Tommy""), 66, of Thaxton, died Saturday, May 4, 1996 in a Salem hospital. He was born in Bedford County, August 10, 1929, a son of the late Joseph B. Johnson and Nellie Carter Johnson. He was a retired employee of Dayton Transfer Co. He is survived by his wife, Mamie Witt Johnson; four sons, Raymond J. Johnson of Vinton, Larry D. Johnson, Edward L. Johnson and Roger L. Johnson, all of Thaxton; a daughter, Helen Marie Reed of Roanoke; three brothers, Ray Johnson of Charlottesville, Richard Johnson of Bedford and Willie Johnson of Thaxton; a sister, Helen Lacy of Thaxton; also 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. LACEY, Maravene, 59, of Dublin, passed away Saturday, May 4, 1996 at Radford Community Hospital. She and her husband owned and operated Pond Valley Farm. Survivors include her husband, David Lacey of Dublin; one son, Allan Lacey of Dublin; one sister, Faye Gauger of Hannibal, N.Y.; one brother, Charles Hungerford of Englewood, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 7, 1996 at 11 a.m. in the Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford, with the Rev. Jeff Aikens officiating. LEVIN, Artie, 82, of Roanoke, died Friday, May 3, 1996, in good health, doing what he enjoyed, working out. Artie was preceded in death by his wife, Kay Levin, and is survived by his son, Dr. Larry Levin, Boca Raton, Fla.; his daughter and son-in-law, Cindy Levin Goldstein and Lawrence Goldstein; his grandson, Clark Goldstein, all of Roanoke. Artie was an active member of the Roanoke Valley Community, serving in various capacities in the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, the Roanoke Conference of Christians and Jews (also an honoree receiving the Brotherhood Award), Beth Israel Synagogue, B'nai B'rith (helped develop the Athletic and Achievement Award), Roanoke Valley Together, the United Jewish Appeal and Roanoke Jewish Community Council. Artie, known as Mr. Fitness to many, was also a world rated tri-athlete in his age category, received Father of the Year Award, and was a man who gave of his time and energy to many local charities and groups. He was involved in promoting physical fitness and wellness for everyone, which he shared in his television exercise shows from 1961 through 1988. Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon Monday, May 6, 1996, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, with Rabbi Jerome Fox officiating. Interment will be private. NICELY, Russell Eugene, Jr., (``Tommy""), 51, of Vinton, died Saturday, May 4, 1996, at the VA Medical Center in Salem. He was born on April 27, 1945, in Clifton Forge. He was a lifetime member of the DAV. He was retired from the VA Medical Center in Salem. He was the son of the late Russell Eugene and Mary Vest Nicely of Clifton Forge. He served in the Vietnam Conflict. He was a member of Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church in Vinton. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elnora McDavid and Gail Anthony. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia (``Cindy"") Yager Nicely of Vinton, and a daughter, Heather Nicely of South Carolina. Also surviving are three brothers, Jack C. Nicely of Chester, Sherman G. Nicely of Clifton Forge and Grant D. Nicely of Roanoke; three sisters, Leota Collins of Salem, Nellie Sampson of Clifton Forge and Jean Johnson of Buchanan, and a number of nieces and nephews. O'DELL, Macie Ernestine, 68, of Rocky Mount, passed away Friday, May 3, 1996. Born on September 17, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Mary Roberts Spicer. Surviving are her husband, William Paul O'Dell of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Freddie Cundiff of Rocky Mount; two sisters, Victoria Odle of Salem and Rosie Odle of Chicago, Ill.; one grandson, Jimmy Wayn e Hubbard of Rocky Mount, and several nieces and nephews. OVERSTREET, Mamie, 80, of 324 Tanyard Road, Rocky Mount, died Thursday, May 2, 1996 at the local hospital. She was a daughter of the late Benjamin Harrison and Betty Lee Oakes McCrickard and was also preceded in death by a grandson, Brian P. Walker and a brother, Jessie McCrickard. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Frances W. and Neil Larsson, Rocky Point, N.C.; two granddaughters, Shawn Walker, Silver Spring, Md., Sherry Walker, Arlington; a grandson and his wife, Brad and Fiona Walker, Melbourne, Australia; foster grandson and his wife, Michael and Connie Levine; her sister, Virgie M. RINGSTAFF, Donald Wayne, 42, of Roanoke, passed on Saturday, May 4, 1996. He was born in Richlands, Va,. and went on to be raised in Bluefield, Va. For the past eleven years, he resided in Roanoke. He was a local musician and had played trumpet and percussions with the Collegians and also other local groups. He was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church on Grandin Road, Roanoke. He also was a member of B.P.O.E. #197 of Roanoke. He was a beloved son, father and husband and his surviving family include, his wife, Brenda Angles Ringstaff; a son, Travis Emory Kendrick Ringstaff; a daughter, Angela Nicole Ringstaff, all of Roanoke; his parents, Thomas and Effie Ringstaff of Bluefield, Va.; numerous cousins, family and many friends. The family will receive friends Monday, May 6, 1996, at the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel, Salem. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 7, 1996 at 2 p.m. in the Unitarian Universalist Church, 2015 Grandin Rd., Roanoke, Va., with the Rev. Kirk Ballen officiating.

ROSSER, Rev. Dr. Aubrey Jones, of Yorktown, longtime Virginia Baptist pastor, died Friday morning, May 3, 1996 at the age of 68. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Anne Plunkett Rosser, of the residence; and four sons, Aubrey J. Rosser, Jr. and his wife, Donna H. Rosser of Altavista, Va., Stephen H. Rosser of New York City, Philip W. Rosser of Richmond, Va. and Jonathan B. Rosser of New York City. He had three grandchildren, Aubrey J. Rosser, III and Allison W. Rosser of Altavista and Renee Lauren Rosser of Richmond. He is also survived by a brother, Dois I. Rosser and his wife, Sh irley S. Rosser; and two sisters, Eleanor Rosser Ayer and her husband, Henry Wood Ayer, Sr., Lillian Rosser Moore and her husband, Leslie M. Moore, all of Hampton; a sister and brother-in-law, Dr. Jeanne P. Beckett and Dr. Charles A. Beckett, of Richmond; and a sister-in-law, Faye C. Plunkett, also of Richmond. He had thirteen nephews and nieces, and many grand-nephews and nieces. Dr. Rosser was born April 30, 1928 in Hampton, graduated from Hampton High School in 1946 and from the University of Richmond in 1950. At the University, he was awarded All-South honors as a member of the varsity football team, and was recognized by Who's Who Among America's College and University Students. He was also a member of Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Fraternity and Theta Chi Fraternity. He received his theological education at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C., graduating in 1955, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by the University of Richmond in 1976. He served as pastor of nine Virginia Baptist churches from 1952 until his retirement in 1995. These include Second Baptist Church, South Boston; Blairs Baptist Church and Chestnut Level Baptist Church, both of Pittsylvania County; Webber Memorial Baptist Church, Richmond; Belmont Baptist Church, Roanoke; Monument Heights Baptist Church and Bainbridge-Southampton Baptist Church, Richmond; and Memorial Baptist Church and Big Bethel Baptist Church, both of Hampton. Dr. Rosser was a past member of the Virginia Baptist General Board and served in various leadership positions in Virginia Baptist life. He and his wife were charter members of the Alliance of Baptists and honorary members of the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond Alumni/a Association. An avid sportsman, he competed in athletics until a year before his death, and was a past award winner in the STate Master's Golden Olympics. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 7, 1996 at Hampton Baptist Church, King Street, Hampton, Va., at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends Monday, May 6, 1996, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the home of Dois I. Rosser, 4018 Chesapeake Ave., Hampton, Jas well as after the service in the church fellowship hall. SUTTLES, Evelyn, 69, of Baltimore, Md., died Thursday, May 2, 1996 at her home. She retired from Steak and Egg Kitchen, Roanoke. She was preceded in death by one brother.She is survived by four children; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers; two sisters. Funeral services will be Monday, May 6, 1996 in Baltimore.

THOMPSON, Beul ah Mae Dailey, 84, of Blacksburg, went to meet Jesus at 8:45 p.m. Friday, May 3, 1996. She was born in Houston, Texas on December 31, 1911. She moved to Blacksburg around 1966 and worked at the circulation desk at the Virginia Tech Library. She was a member of the Blacksburg Baptist Church. In 1980 she had a debilitating stroke and has been a resident at Heritage Hall ever since. Beulah was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin, in 1978. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Naomi Wilson-Nicely and her husband, Edward, Christiansburg, Elsie Leaden of Washington; two sons, Franklin Mac Thompson, Pocohontas, Va. and John Thompson, N. Tazewell, Va.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 6, 1996, at 10 a.m. at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Don McKinney. TURMAN, Eldridge E., (``Chuck""), 64, of Dugspur, passed away Friday, May 3, 1996 at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Salem, Va. He was born August 7, 1931 in Carroll County. VAIDEN, Rev. William Rodney, 94, of Salem, died Tuesday, April 30, 1996. Rev. Vaiden was a 1924 graduate of Mount Vernon College in Baltimore, Md., and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Richmond in 1927. He entered Southern Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. and graduated in 1931 with a Masters Degree in Theological Studies. He served several Baptist churches in Virginia, (including Vesuvius Baptist Church), North Carolina, Maryland and West Virginia, but his health caused him to take retirement. He served as a Chaplain in the Civil Conservation Corps Camp in Virginia, and from 1953 to 1979, he had worked for a Navy Repair Facility in the Naval Amphivious School. Rev. Vaiden was preceded in death by his wife, Ivis Hawse Vaiden, and his sisters, Mildred V. Aird and Victoria V. Worden, and is survived by his niece, Victoria W. Owen, Newark, Del.; his nephew, Stanley Worden, Trenton, N.J.; a great-nephew, David E. Owen, Watertown, Mass.; a great-grandnephew, David E. Owen, V. WILLOUGHBY, Mary Elizabeth Hoggard, 77, of 909 Winwood Drive, Windsor, N.C., died Saturday, May 4, 1996 in a Roanoke hospital. She is survives by a son, Mike Willoughby of Wake Forest, N.C.; and a daughter, Betty Willoughby Gee of Roanoke; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, May 5, 1996, at the Windsor United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Clyde Denny. Burial to follow in Edgewood Cemetery.
